Derek Paravicini's unique musical abilities are recognised all over the world. Now, with three exceptional musicians - Hannah Davey (vocals), Ben Holder (jazz violin) and Ollie Howell (drums), Derek has formed his own ensemble - the Derek Paravicini Quartet (DPQ) . This fortuitous coming together of musical friends is bringing a new ‘wow’ factor to the music scene in the UK following their successful debut on Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ programme, with their incredible blend of musicianship and virtuosity. This debut album from the group is a collection of entirely new interpretations of standards: at once vibrant and moving, earthy and sublime. A must-have collection.

Derek Paravicini himself is masterful, as is Ben Holder whose violin playing is inspired. The only instrumental track that fails is 'Take five' which seems mechanical compared to Dave Brubeck's original, but the other tracks are enjoyable enough that we can let that pass. The 'In crowd' track is a particular joy.
Anyway, do as I did, just delete all the dirges from your playlist and enjoy the rest!
This album takes his performance to another level. He also adds something to the music by his wonderful flourishes - and there are elements of really brilliant jazz in his playing, echoing Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson and other, but with huge originality too. Sometimes you hear the unexpected but the overall quality is amazing and the additions add interest, and don't grate.
The other 3/4 of the quartet are excellent and I was very moved by the version of Over The Rainbow, influenced by Eva Cassidy of course, but still fresh and very well performed.
Seriously, it is a classic. Already.

Fabulous! What amazing musicians. I could listen to any one of them on their own, but together they are superb. The best cd I've bought all year.Published on 18 Jan. 2015 by Mrs. Lynne E. Whitworth
