A year has gone by since we last visited Broad Hill Retirement Home and the old gang is back. Derek Noakes (Ricky Gervais) is still spreading kindness wherever he goes. Kev (David Earl) is still drunk. Dougie (Karl Pilkington) is still grumpy. Hannah (Kerry Godliman) is still the salt of the earth. Wayward youth Vicky (Holli Dempsey) is now working there full-time and providing the residents with 'free' slippers - no questions asked. And there are some new elderly tenants who've since joined the home. Derek's dad moves in, but far from being the sweet old man, he's got whisky in his back pocket and too much lead in his front one.

*** It might contain some SPOILERS*** I'm a huge fan of the comedian Ricky Gervais. I love The Office, Extras and the first season of Derek. It was moving, funny, a little silent gem in the ocean of series. The second season is a huge disappointment though. The source of the most immature jokes or „funny“ situations is the quite discusting and often imagined sexual life of Kevin (or even the sexual life of the residents). „Vagina“, „minge“, „cock“, „penis“ are not funny only because of repeating them. Vicarious embarrassment. The episodes are neither moving-emotional nor funny, they are just boring and cheesy. The character of the new assistance as a counterpart of Derek is just ridiculosly one-sided and his turn at hte end is just not credible. Implausible dialogues (e.g. between Vicky and the guy in the zoo). Again, the first season is brilliant. The only positive thing ist the performance of the two ladies, Hannah and Vicky. And some nice moments too. As much as I loved the first season, I cannot give more than 2 stars for this performance, only because of Hannah and Vicky. Sorry Derek, we don't love you anymore.

This is a 21st century example of what Christianity is all about. Maybe this sounds strange in the context of a comedy but Ricky Gervais gently demonstrates what CHARITY really is about: respect for the other inspite of his handicap, unkindness, weakness or un-sociability. This goes for the main character as well as the rest of assorted loosers and loomers around him, some of whom are really unpleasant specimins when we first meet them. Derek, because of his simplicity, makes us see the good in all of them. I was so touched by this series. And it is funny.

Fans of Gervais will love this. Very funny in parts though you'll need a ready supply of tissues for the many sad bits.
