They say that everyone has "a book in them" and there are very few people that don`t have a tale to tell one way or another - but actually putting it into print and making it readabale is another matter altogether. Derbyshire Born describes the author's route from a rural farm to big business, but his autobiography is in some ways incidental to his glorious descriptions of the going's on in small town Britain in the post WW2 period as seen through the eyes of a youngster. You don`t have to be from Derbyshire to appreciate this, but if you are from his neck of the woods there's plenty of places and names to keep you going. I would describe John Smith's style as easy reading for the most part, but on those occasions where he recalls emotional or painful periods of his life it becomes remarkably profound and touching.
The highlight of this book for me was the vivid picture he painted of the goings on and characters in the local 1960's British Rail admin offices - a must read chapter for anyone wishing to learn more about the collar and tie side of the industry.
Buy this book and enjoy it.. then read it to your Children (They'll love it) then give it to your Mum or Grandparents for Christmas. There's something for everyone.
Life on the farm in Derbyshire was not easy but John's aspirations never faltered, young people of today should be inspired by the content.
