This book is very good. It gives a good and thorough overview of the 'softer' types of bipolar. The whole bipolar scale is described well, right from barely noticeable mood swings to very obvious ones. I don't think you can find a much better book about bipolar 2 and other 'soft' versions. There is also some great info about treatment including medication, therapy and and self-management techniques. There is even a section explaining how to deal with your doctor! That's something I found very useful. There are also lots of case studies described through out the book, which helps the reader to know more about other people's experiences with having 'softer' bipolar.
The book is very thorough in every aspect and written in an entertaining self-ironic language. It provides info about many things most other bipolar books don't! It also describes some of the bipolar theory which I really like, and it does so in an easy to understand language. Only thing I don't like about the book is that the author at some point states that he is trying to convince the reader that she/he has bipolar..
But definitely a book well worth buying!

I found this book approachable and easy to read. It would be very useful in the phase before diagnosis when BP has been 'mentioned' as a possibility.
Although the book covers many areas, I felt it went on a little in places and the author appeared to repeat himself.

I don't normally write reviews on here because I feel they are a waste of time. In my experience people seem to always have polarised opinions and either give 5 stars or 1 star. This means you end up with piles of useless books bought on the reccomendation of idiots you don't know who would give a book 5 stars if it had a picture of a puppy on it. I felt I should write a review this time because part of the nature of Hypomanic phases for me is buying millions of books on a subject so I think those of us with these symptons need all the help we can get.
I was diagnosed with Cyclothymia several years ago and have read countless books on the subject of Cyclothymia and Bipolar disorder. Most of the books available are very similar and give a very good description of the symptoms and also of what drugs you can expect to be given by your Doctor. Where they fail is on how you can adjust your lifestyle and diet to help yourself. It was very encouraging to have some of the methods I have found by trial and error validated in a book written by an expert. If you really want to help yourself buy this book and actually do some of the things that are recommended. In my experience take special notice of the exercise chapter and the diet information in chapter 10 and also the sleep and alcohol information in Chapter 11. Alcohol was one of the most important factors for me and continues to be tricky occasionally, I think eliminating alcohol is one of the most important things you should do and this book is a big encouragement. I personally think that chapter 10 is wrongly titled because it covers much more than managing weight gain so don't skip it if like me you have no problem with weight gain, there is a wealth of information in there about diet and mood.

This book, or at least the first few chapters of this book is a must read for anyone with Bipolar II. It gave me so many insights.
Towards the end it gets too medical, but the first few chapters are worth it.

I cannot begin to describe how vital this is in dealing with my own Bipolar II. Understanding how it manifests and identifying my symptoms has been incredibly helpful. If you had to own one book to help you tackle depression I would recommend this one.

Read the book from start to finish in two sittings. Simple and clear education about my disorder. Uncovered symptoms which I thought were just me and I am now are able to manage them, making my life and the lives of the people closest to me much better. Bipolar and mental illness is incredibly complicated, yet jim seems to make it simple even though there is an incredible amount of detail. No one wants to be sick, but if you are this book has tools on how to get well (manageable symptoms as there are no quick fixes) and manages to give a little hope that all is not lost. It's is my opinion that not exercising is incredibly foolish in the realm of mental illness, since being diagnosed I am the fittest I have ever been in my life and it makes a world of difference. There are some easy ways to start exercising in the book. If you don't find something useful in the book I would be very surprised.

This book hands down saved my life! It helped me figure out what was truly wrong with me and what symptoms I was having. I was able to bring it up to my psychiatrist and finally after many years get properly diagnosed and properly medicated. I highly recommend reading this book if you're going through a mental health crisis and are unable to get properly diagnosed. Maybe you'll recognize yourself in some of the related conditions in the book and be better able to discuss it with your doctor.

Reviewed in Canada on 29 December 2015

This book was not *quite* what I was expecting. I was hoping for more information on Bipolar type 2. Instead it provides an abundance of (useful) information about the "Bipolar Spectrum" and "Soft Bipolar" or bipolar before the Bipolar type 2 designation.

This book is not meant to be a tool for self diagnosis. However, if you and your mental health team are at odds about your treatment, or your skeptical about your diagnosis this is an easy read that should help provide some perspective as to what may be going on with your mental health and provide some light as to what you personally can suggest to your doctor you'd like to pursue as an avenue of treatment.

IF You think this book is actually going to answer the question as to "Why [you're] still depressed" after how [x] amount of months/years then you are sorely mistaken.
