Product Description

Now you can easily convert all of your favourite records to MP3 digital audio tracks with Denon’s DP-200USB fully automatic turntable. Equipped with an internal MP3 encoder, along with a front panel USB port, the DP-200USB lets you play your favorite LPs and create MP3 tracks easily and automatically. The included PC software features Audio Waveform Recognition, which checks the first 15 seconds of each track and searches the extensive Gracenote Internet music tracks database to capture the track’s meta-deta (artist, title, etc.). The software also features Auto Track Divide, which notes silent breaks between tracks and automatically inserts a new track tag for each track (you also have the option of doing this manually). The front panel USB port allows connection to a USB flash drive. In addition to the USB connection, the DP-200USB features conventional stereo outputs, which can be configured with or without RIAA equalisation, for full compatibility with the widest range of audio components.

My LP collection, 40 year-old Philips 202 3-speed turntable, and Aiwa tape deck, were boxed away for 7 years due to house renovations (don't ask), and when resurrected recently, the drives had deteriorated so much they were absolutely useless. Happy coincidence, my family bought me the Denon DP-200 USB turntable for my 80th birthday. Playing my LPs on it through my also 40 year-old Armstrong 526 Stereo Amplifer, and Wharfedale Dovedale 3 speakers in my study, I have to put on record that I am delighted with the performance. I must try it some day with my Denon D-77 system and Mission speakers in the lounge where I play my CD and tape collection, but I'm having too much fun where it is at the moment. I have no doubt that it will perform equally well. It has reminded me of the Sugden turntable of my youth and has finally persuaded me that vinyl LPs are superior to CDs. Listening to the Carlos Kleiber recording of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, which I have in both formats, there is no doubt in my mind which is superior in sound quality. LPs certainly have a more pleasant quality that I have been missing these seven years, against the hardness of CDs.

I haven't attempted to used the recording feature of the turntable. My younger family thought it would be a good idea to have it available, but why use MP3 when you've got Dovedale 3s? I have no doubt it will perform equally well. As an old Hi-Fi man, in every sense of the word, in my experience Denon equipment is like that! I can thoroughly recommend this turntable to any of my generation who suddenly find themselves short of a turntable to play their LP collection. Or even if not. This one is worth every penny! Treat yourself. You don't have to wait until you are 80 to have this much fun!

I'm a music fan rather than a hi-fi fan. Looking at new record players I noticed many seemed too cheap and nasty (those all-in-one retro machines) or too much about the hi-fi (i.e. manual cueing, pre-amps etc.) I wanted something of decent quality but practical and convenient, and of course at a sensible price.

This one fits the bill:
* 1 button start and stop, soft and precise cueing action.
* line out to connect into normal audio/video input of any music system.
* USB recording to a USB stick. Very easy to record. The software to edit and tag the MP3 files takes a few minutes to master, although ultimately it's pretty straightforward.
* brushed aluminium (imitation) to match my existing medium-fi. Plastic but nice build quality, belt-driven aluminium platter etc.
* Not too expensive, not too cheap, £150 is spot on!

I'm very happy with this purchase.

I received this item yesterday & had it up & running/recording within 10 minutes. So simple to install & record from. I can't understand the people who have reviewed this, saying they can only record 1 item at a time, as it says, a 1GB memory stick will give you about 30 albums. I have no problem with it. The only thing, is that the database you edit to is only a CD database, so therefore, if the vinyl you have hasn't been released on CD, you have to edit this yourself, which again, I don't have a problem with. The recording to a USB stick is at 192 bitrate, and again this is very good. An excellent buy.

The problem was to find a way of converting old LPs we treasured to MP3 format before a big clearot. Elsewhere on Amazon the suggested solution is to buy a complete, cheap music centre with the ability to take a memory stick. I didn't really want to do that when I already had a decent Denon set-up - tuner, CD player, speakers. Then I found this Denon turntable which has the same facility to take a memory stick and which matched the gear we already had. Perfect answer! It's a good turntable, and we're delighted with it. It comes with software for your PC, which allows you to separate the tracks (each side of an LP is recorded as one track), and then to identify the LP on the internet. There are auto and manual options for separating the tracks - the manual works best, but operates in real time, so is a bit time-consuming. The only reason for not giving the package the full five-star billing is that I found the task of identifying the tracks via the internet a bit hit and miss - but that may be as much to do with our obscure tastes in music, and bewhskered the collection than anything else.

I bought this Denon turntable as I already have a Denon compact hifi system so it seemed a logical choice. Also other USB decks I looked at didn't have the option of using a flash drive, instead they needed a direct connection to a PC.
Clear instructions are provided and I was up and running in around 15 minutes. Sound quality seems very good, nice to hear albums for the first time in something like 20 years!

However, the first thing I noticed was that the start of my recordings were being cut off. I had read other reviews that mentioned this but it was only after reading the instructions that I realised I had to wait until the recording light was actually flashing before recording started. In my case this took around 20 seconds after pushing the record button but apparently can vary depending on the flash drive used. The software supplied took a while to get used to but seems to work well. As others have said there is no on/off indication which there should be, hence the 4* rating.

All in all I think for £130 this is a decent turntable that does the job I wanted it to and does it well.

EDIT: Previous reviewers have commented that the turntable speed is faster than it should be. I downloaded and printed a 50 Hz speed test disc and can confirm this is indeed the case. Anyone who is particular about having the speed spot on may want to look elsewhere for a better turntable.
