About the author

I was born in Birmingham, in the United Kingdom. I studied Ancient & Medieval History at university and am a qualified teacher.
I enjoy science fiction, fantasy and horror, both in books and on screen, as well as collecting and painting miniatures and table top war gaming. I am a lover of art, music, film and classic computer games.
I have loved cyberpunk-themed films, games and music for many, many years. This, in part, inspired my cyberpunk science-fiction books. I have also written and published horror, poetry, fantasy and children’s books.
Alongside my writing, I am a keen pencil and digital artist.

However, for me the flush cyberpunk setting Dar's novel The Demon brings to mind more the vivid colours of Batman of the Future. This comparison with Batman continues to the dark detective-like character at the centre of the book's plot. Grittier than most dark knight stories, Dar invites us into a grim city where murder is lit by bright neon lights.
If you're looking to escape from our current dystopia into one with more hi-fi action and less social distancing, this is one to read!
The characters are nuanced and well thought out. There are no white knights and helpless damsels here, and at some points you may not like a character's actions or their past as you learn more, but for me this makes them more real and their story arcs more powerful in the end. The interactions between Donovan and Charlie are great and very sweet in places.
The book has some fantastic iconography, from Donovan's coat, his lighter, his muscle car, to Violet's motorcycle, the HelixCorp building...even Donovan's coat stand! They all combine to give you a great sense of this world and act as touchstones throughout...i think these would translate very well on the screen!
There is also a ton of action and each scene moves the story along at a breakneck pace. Personally i loved the perspective shift that sometimes occurred within chapters, often in very short burst. For me this really amped up the tension in places very effectively.
Dar manages to do a great deal of world building as we hurtle along, especially for a shorter novel and there are certainly some twists and shocks as we reach the end that left me more than ready for the next installment.
I would certainly recommend The Demon to all lovers of Cyberpunk, Sci-Fi and Gritty Comic books, it was a great read!
In The Demon we are introduced to Michael "The Demon" Donovan. He's your typical world-beaten vigilante seeking redemption, but rest assured, the futurist setting of the book gives a fresh take on this well-loved trope.
And then there's Charlie Floyd. Serving as the book's main protagonist, Charlie is a young journalist with a head on her shoulders, and thirst to unearth the corruption of HelixCorp; an organisation with nefarious methods.
Michael and Charlie's paths soon cross, and they find themselves with a shared goal. Along the way they meet a diverse and colourful (quite literally) cast of characters, including a biker gang influences by a murder of crows!
This book may not have been all that big, but it was packed with both action and plot that kept me reading!
Michael ‘The Demon’ Donovan is a feared vigilante, cleaning up the mean streets of the techno, neon lit streets of a near cyberish futuristic city. His vulnerability shows on him after saving the life of Charlie Floyd, a determined journalist who wants to get to the truth behind a powerful genetics company.
What ensues is nothing short of a thrilling ride of badassary and vengeance. I could not put this book down. The writing is straightforward and to the point. The author has created characters that you as the reader become wholeheartedly invested in. I knew from about a quarter of the way through the book that I wasn’t going to want it to end and by the time I got there I was cursing the author, had a tear in my eye, a lump in my throat and a pulse racing for more.
I can see the events of this book flicker through my mind as though I watched it on the big screen; vibes of sci-fi action movies crossed with classic Frankenstein-esque horrors spring to mind as visuals. Who is the real demon of this story? You’ll have to read it to find out.
