I recently moved into a new property, and lacking usable storage space decided to install a loft ladder to be able to take advantage of the space in the loft.
After loads and loads of searching I picked the BPS loft ladder. The main reasons I purchased this one over the others included:
- great price
- deeper steps
- thicker insulation
- it doesn't take any space away from the loft.

Its was relatively easy to install (with help from a competent DIYer). You'll have to make a frame in the loft for the loft ladder to sit into - and make sure you make it 5-10mm bigger than ladder frame - that'll help the installation.

The main recommendation I would make though, is to by direct from BPS - £15 cheaper!

Even in my younger days getting into the loft was not easy, I think the house had been built for people who had suffered years of rationing and were a size zero. This ladder is perfect for the job of giving easy access to your loft. It has a frame and the sprung door with the ladder attached, it even has a rubber seal around the door so when it is closed not even a draft goes up or comes down. The ladder was a little long but it is so easy to cut to size, this has given us easy and I mean easy, access to an incredible amount of storage space, The cost of this and a few plywood boards is a lot cheaper than buying a shed to store your items in and the quality and construction is 1st rate. An afternoons work for two is all it took to install this loft door, frame and ladder.

As a retired carpenter, I can say that this is the easiest loft ladder I have fitted, (and there has been many of them) The only cri'ticism I have is that it should be a little wider, or at least be offered that choice. Other than that I strongly recommend this ladder, not only for DIYers, but also for tradesmen.

Pros:

1. Reasonably well made
2. Cheap
3. Relatively easy to fit.

Cons:

1. No adjustment to fine-align the hatch. The frame must be perfectly true so beware
2. The screws to hold the ladder do not hold it in place. While it is designed to be adjusted this way for fine tuning, that does not work. You have to add a couple of extra screws next to the original ones as a "stopper".
3. The foot design is for carpet. It will damage softer laminate or wood flooring. You need to cut the feet to a correct angle and if necessary add rubber pads instead.
4. The steps feel a bit flimsy. I am not very heavy - 86kg is a normal weight for an adult male and they are creaking quite a bit so I will see how they fare.
5. The top part of the ladder is not offset from the hatch. It is a key safety feature when doing high angle (f.e. alternating profile) ladders to leave some space behind the ladder so that you do not step only with your "toes". That is completely missing and the amount of space to place your foot on the top 4 steps is minimal.
6. American Lampoon Christmas Vacation style lock. It can be opened only from downstairs. So if you are locked upstairs, you are locked upstairs.

So for a few pros, you get quite a lot of cons.

The ladder was delivered on time. The item was damaged by the courier. This was reported to the supplier who were excellent in dealing with this and I have no negative comments regarding the supplier.
The ladder plus hatch frame is a bit weighty and because of this I would recommend at least one but preferably two people to support the hatch framework in place for the actual securing process. The ladder is as described and this is an excellent product. My wife has used it and because of the handrails it has given her the confidence to go up into the loft.
Overall this product is excellent and I would recommend this to anyone needing access to their loft space.

Very strong construction and very good finishing! Very easy to install also. The difficult part and more time consuming task is the construction of the bigger opening/case in the loft ceiling rather than the fixing of the ladder in place! A small tip. You do not have to separate the ladder from the casing. You secure in place by screws, underneath the ceiling two battens across the opening nearer the two ends. One person remains in the loft and lowers down, through the new ceiling opening onto the battens, the whole retracted loft ladder. You exactly square the four corners, you screw the casing temporarily in place and you ask your friend to remove the two battens and lower the ladder to the floor. From there on the job is just a piece of cake!

Bought this BPS ladder after some research and - OK I cheated! - I had our builder fit it whilst he was re-furbishing our second-floor apartment. He thought it was brilliant (even recommended it to his mate), and I certainly do. He had to cut off part of the lower ladder to fit our floor to ceiling height but no problems with that. Works really well and I use it a lot to store and retrieve stuff in the loft. I'm 70, with a dodgy leg, so the hand-rails are essential for me. The only area where I have to be careful is using the top few rungs of the ladder, where the ladder is fixed directly to the loft hatch. You can't put your foot properly on these top steps because the hatch blocks it, so you have to use the front of the foot. Having had tendon problems I have to take care. To help me identify these steps when descending, I have marked them with a fluorescent marker pen - looking down, I now know when I can put my foot properly on the step without worrying about hitting the loft hatch. Having said all this, don't let me put you off getting this ladder - it's fantastic, and excellent value for money!
