It arrived amazingly fast considering I don't live in the UK (kudos Amazon!).
My unit was perfectly flat and was not wobbling on the desk.
It did however suffer from a rattling fan that you could hear when the unit was under load (also, picking the unit up with the fans on would make scratching noises as the blades would probably hit the enclosure).
The other issue was the keyboard backlight shining through the ventilation grilles.
The final blow came from the screen: damage to 4 pixels from what looked like a manufacturing issue. Basically a damaged area affecting 4 adjacent pixels. At that point I could not keep myself from not returning it because the number of issues grew in a matter of minutes and who knows what others I would have discovered.
Amazon did offer a replacement but I denied because I cannot take any more chances with something that costs so much. This is not the first XPS. I bought another one with similar specs locally and had stuck pixels, sticky keyboard, uneven touchpad and a non working headphone jack.
Dell's quality control is the worst I've seen and I've owned a few high end laptops from other brands. If they can't get their high end consummer line right, what expectations can you have from them?
I hope they start using better quality display panels since Sharp clearly cannot provide one without issues (at least for the FHD version).
Shame on you Dell!
As for Amazon, I really have no issues with their services and I thank them for being understanding.
First impressions were good: you cannot deny that this device is sexy! It's an aluminium sandwich with carbon fiber in the middle and with a sturdy construction that doesn't flex at all.
The keyboard was ok (no broken keys), the touchpad was correctly seated and had no signs of damage.
Unfortunately the device did not sit perfectly flush on a flat surface which seems to be a common issue (shame on you, Dell), but I fixed it by very gently twisting the case (just by a few millimeters).
Upon first boot I was listening closely for any coil whine and could't hear anything! I was actually quite shocked since my previous units had coil whine (although it was never extremely loud).
After going through the initial Windows 10 setup and after updating everything (Windows, drivers, BIOS), running the included diagnostic tests as well as stress tests, everything performed as it should. No fan issues of any sorts - actually, the fans are quiet most of the time and when they come on, they have a very soft 'whoosh' sound to them.
I did notice some coil whine (only with the device plugged in) but it was nowhere near as bad as I remembered it to be from my previous units or from my other notebook (ASUS Zenbook Pro UX550VD is by far the noisiest laptop I have ever heard - exchanged 2 times due to dead pixels and speaker issues, all units had the exact level of coil whine).
Shifting my focus back to the screen: it's a bright panel, easily visible in direct light. The ghosting mentioned by some people on forums is, in my opinion, a non-issue. It's an IPS panel after all and the response times seem to be within the limitations of this technology (don't worry about it).
It has a bit of edge bleeding (bottom left - the screen is edge-lit so the bleed is where the LEDs are) but it's quite minor and after trying to find a laptop with a perfect screen, I have come to the realization that it is impossible! IPS screens are plagued with edge bleeding and clouding - no screen is perfect but some are worse than others.
Another pleasant surprise was the inclusion of a Samsung NVMe SSD. Read/Write speeds are excellent, the device launches apps viciously fast!
I have had no issues with the ports (especially the audio jack - i've had issues with it on my other units where only one channel was working).
The Killer WiFi card seems to work fine for the moment and I've had no issues with it!
The speakers are somewhat pathetic: they sound like a pair of cheap phone speakers from 7 years ago but after a little fiddling with the included MaxxWave tuning utility, I got them to behave although long listening sessions can become a bit fatiguing because the sound is rather tinny.
- small edge bleed in lower left corner
- tinny speakers
- great build quality, feels like it could damage your tiles and survive unscathed
- bright and vivid screen
- fast performance
- runs very quiet
- nice keyboard (although not the best if you compare it to a Lenovo keyboard for instance) and touhpad
- RAM and SSD are upgradable (big plus for an ultrabook)
All in all, i'm satisfied with it. I will update this review if I discover anything worth sharing!
Ended up returning it because the wobbling started bothering me and the battery life was not great. I'll try getting the 16GB model with 97Whr battery which has probably the best battery life on the market.
