fantastic monitor

ended up buying nearly ten from amazon for the office (visual effects).
They have a fantastic picture and decent enough factory calibration.

the design is a bit dated now with a fairly deep recess frame to screen, but we were more interested in the image quality v price, and these really excel.

I would prefer it if they could go higher on the stands, and also if the anti reflect coating was sightly less granular, but these are minor issues for the work we do.

the icing on the cake with these would be multiple USB in, so that you could switch the mouse and keyboard along with the many monitor inputs you get but it doesnt seem manufacturers bother, and its not something we needed for all machines, just would have been a nice extra as the monitor switching of inputs is very clean.

Good for the price, but edging into obsolescence

I decided to buy this monitor after surveying all the WQHD displays currently available around July 2012; the only viable alternatives were the Samsung S27A850 and the HP ZR2740W, which had mixed reviews and poor availability, and the budget options from Hazro, Catleap and Digimate, which suffered from cheap construction and questionable product support.

While this Dell had a power-hungry CCFL backlight and a reputation for a grainy anti-glare coating, I reasoned that the price was right, the product warranty was excellent, and that - as a recovering professional photographer - I might appreciate the model's wide-gamut color range.

The U2711 I received had a manufacturing defect, in that the bezel bulged away from the screen at one point, and so the unit was returned for a refund. I nonetheless had the opportunity to get to know the monitor for a few days.

The much-maligned anti-glare coating is indeed evident in areas of uniform light colours, but it eventually ceased to be an active distraction. I imagine it could be problematic if carefully de-noising photographs. The colour rendition and the associated presets are extremely good.

The quality of construction (setting aside the defect above) is excellent; the product is sturdy, has a great stand, sports a well-designed and elegant on-screen display system, and ships with a generous bunch of cables.

So why did I return it for a refund rather than a replacement? Several reasons:

1. The CCFL backlights squander electricity and generate both heat and a faint background hum at low brightness levels. This is currently the inevitable price of wide-gamut colour support, but wide-gamut W-LED displays from LG and others are on the horizon, and the vast majority of users - including pro photographers - are arguably best served by the sRGB color-space, which current LED monitors support well.

2. The grainy anti-glare coating is still an occasional distraction; Dell's own newer models have a smooth anti-glare coating, presumably as a result of widespread consumer feedback.

3. Newer alternative monitors are just now becoming available. Specifically, Dell's new U2713HM has a lower RRP than the U2711 while maintaining the WQHD resolution; it has a low-energy LED backlight, an integral USB 3.0 hub in place of the U2711's USB 2.0 hub, a landscape-to-portrait rotatable stand, and the aforementioned smooth anti-glare coating. For most people, this will be a better choice than the U2711. ASUS are also set to release the similar PB278Q (formerly VA278Q).

I'll be buying a U2713HM once Amazon stock it themselves, and once the edge has been taken off the introductory price of £575.

I've had this monitor for a month now and I've to say that it's phenomenal. I was using the Dell 2405FPW for 5 years until the U2711 was released, almost matching the resolution of the 30-inch (2560 by 1600), at almost half the price. It's a bargain.

The resolution is outstanding at 2560 by 1440. Yes, there's 160 pixels missing from the bottom compared to a typical 30-inch, but coming up from 1920 by 1200 it doesn't really matter.

The colours are vibrant, which is great. The text is a bit smaller, of a size you typically see on 13-inch laptops. It took me a while to get used to the smaller font size.

This set is still non-glossy. But apparently, Dell has applied some anti-glare coating. I've read on forums that some customers disliked it but I've no problem with it.

Compared to a 24-inch, 1920 by 1200, the U2711 isn't much taller, it's much wider. I can fit two webpages, 1024px each, and still be able to see icons on the desktop.

As for backlight bleeding, it's hard to detect. It means if your widescreen movies still show the letterbox black bars, you'll be less distracted.

The U2711 also works well with my PS3 via HDMI. I'm not sure of the audio capabilities but I use a 2.1 speaker plugged in with a 3.5mm jack. One thing to note is you'll have to set the audio settings on your PS3 to output 2.1 sound to make sure they output all the sound, dialogue, effects, surround, etc.

Gaming on the PS3 is very enjoyable. The games had to be upscaled and there's a notch of graininess. Not really an issue unless you're sitting really close. Everything looks pretty snappy and I don't notice any lag but I'm don't really play FPS games.

Note that this monitor would require a decent graphics card with dual-DVI output. If you want to game at the maximum resolution, they you need a powerful card.

This is a huge physical monitor. My table is really small and it took up almost half of it. But not regrets.

I managed to get this LCD at $445 pounds equivalent in Asia, Singapore. That's after two coupons from the Dell website. It's really value for money. This set is going to last me for a long time, until the slimmer LED version comes out in who-knows-which year.

I would recommend this monitor to graphic designers, photographers or anything who multi-task a lot.

- For Mac Users -

I'm using this on a Mac Pro and have powered it on two graphic card, not both at the same time. It's plug and play, no drivers required.

On the ATI Radeon X1900XT, you won't be able to see the dual boot screen if you hold Alt after the startup (that's if you're using Boot Camp). On the ATI Radeon 4870, it works just flawlessly.

Excellent monitor - top image/colour quality, especially after proper calibration, and amazing definition. Huge amount of desktop space... Beware, you must use the (shipped) DVI-2 cable to get the top resolution... surprised me as I just tried to swap my old monitior round at first, but with no success on highest defn. No trouble at all as the proper cables are included, but not a very well known fact.
