A Truly Excellent Monitor

This is an excellent monitor for serious work.

I arrived here because I recently replaced my iMac: the new model has a glossy screen and I cannot work with the reflections. The iMac now stands to one side as my secondary monitor and the U2311 (or the U2311H as it's formally named) is my principal monitor.

The colour quality and range is excellent, and there are many built-in software options which made it astonishingly easy to match colours -- to lithographic and digital press output and to photographic prints. Also, it has sharpness control, which makes text far more precise and easier to read than with any other screen I've used.

There's a good range of positional adjustment, which makes a welcome improvement to my working posture, and it will even rotate for portrait format, which will be an asset sometimes.

There are many, far more expensive professional monitors and perhaps they're even better, but if you have to work within a budget then this one is streets ahead of others you could buy. Have no hesitation in choosing it.

PS.

Some people say that a glossy screen makes colours "deeper" and more "vibrant", but working with two calibrated IPS screens side by side, I find the images are identical, except that one doesn't have reflections. I think it's just an illusion, as with glossy photographic prints compared to matt, and the proverbial glossy brochure.

Great value for money

I ordered two of these monitors for photo editing, The screens are easily large enough for what I need and they are easily adjusted for height, tilt, angle and 90 degree rotation so I can get them just set just how I like them without any fuss.
The stands are sturdy and spring loaded to ease the movement of the screens when needed and have enough weight in them so that they don't move about at all when you are adjusting the screen. The amount of adjustment available is perfect for my desktop and I doubt if anyone would need more no matter what their set up. The rotation of the screen is also very useful when editing portrait shots as you can fill the screen and not be distracted by the screen background.
Although I haven't calibrated the screens properly they appear to have very good colour quality and accuracy comparing them to professionally printed images, adjustments are easy to achieve with the buttons on the front panel rather than hidden along the sides or back, the only problem being it is easy to touch them by mistake when moving the screens.

until I connect them to my PC I won't be able to try the other connections to see if the quality is any better.

The one problem I have seen with both screens is on white backgrounds at higher contrast, there is a distinct flicker across the screen and you can see what looks like the screen refreshing from top to bottom, this is completely gone on anything but white and as I will be working with the contrast set fairly low it may not be an issue, only time will tell.

Over all I am very happy with this screen and being an IPS screen am even more than happy with the price.

I would have liked to see a paper manual for the screen as well as the CD included in the packing.

Perfect monitor for my needs

I really love this monitor. I wanted a large screen to plug into my new Sony laptop so that I could work comfortably from home. I only had a small budget so this was perfect for my needs. The monitor was easy to setup and is nicely designed. The clarity of the screen is fantastic and the size sits comfortably on my desk without looking like something out of a multi-plex cinema. I had one problem when I set it up, I had zig-zag lines across it for quite a while and I was about to send it back as faulty when my friend pointed out that I was using the wrong cable. The cable supplied (VGA) does not go up to the resolution of my laptop (1366x768) so it couldn't cope. I then bought an HDMI/DVI-D cable and it fixed the problem instantly. This is NOT mentioned anywhere in the documentation and I spent ages trying to update drivers and didn't find any mention of this on message boards. The documentation is pretty poor, it comes with a cruddy CD-ROM where old fashioned paper would probably suffice but don't let that put you off. Also, there is no HDMI connector on the monitor itself but that's not really caused a problem. Great value for a good quality monitor, very pleased with my purchase, plus had great delivery from Amazon.

Out the box this thing is extremely bright. I am using this as my primary monitor next to an aged iMac. Turning it down to about 50% brightness seems to match the iMac's maximum brightness setting!

Second in line was to adjust the colour settings for each display. I didn't want to splash out on a Colour Calibration Kit such as the Spyder3Elite (PC/Mac) so with much trial and error I did it by my eye's (I wouldn't recommend it). However the outcome is two monitors that are almost identical. Also to note I adjusted the colours on my iMac display not so much the Dell as the Dell's visuals were pretty impressive out the box! (Minus the brightness setting.)

Setting this as my primary monitor for both Windows & OS X was straight forward and the 1080p screen estate is great :), also to note I have no dead /stuck pixels which I would probably give it one star if I found a single one! I will probably buy a calibrator next as my design endeavours require more scrutiny in colour perspectives.

It's the most I've spent on a desktop monitor, but well worth the money!
