I think it's a great little printer, I did have a couple of paper jams at first but found it was due to the paper not being loaded in the correct place. The print is clear and looks so much better than inkjet printers produce, there is even a slight sheen to the pictures I've printed which adds to the quality of my pictures. The cost of the replacement cartridges does seem high but when compared to the cost of inkjet cartridges it does actually represent excellent value for money as they do not dry out in the same way.
It could do with some sort of paper guides to enable you to line the blank paper up in the correct position.
One little thing that confused me was that the paper tray cover had a notice above it which appeared to be 'stuck' in the machine; and since the cover was inserted into position I did not realize what was holding the notice in and was wary of pulling too hard on it. Eventually I discovered that the paper cover simply lifts off and that's when I saw that some tape was holding the notice in place, and I was able to removed it!!
The CD Rom installs quicker than some, and I didn't need to switch off to complete installation. However, it didn't include the manual, but it is worth mentioning that this can be downloaded via the dell.com website (simply type manuals c1660w and you will quickly find it).
On what I have printed so far, the quality is excellent, a million times better than inkjet. (I may be exaggerating a little but you get the drift, I hope).
I will update this if I need to say more.
Connected to Windows server 2012 via wifi and it identified and downloaded the correct driver and started working.
Connected to an iMac and Macbook Pro using wifi, I manually downloaded the driver from the Dell website for OSX Mavericks and it installed the package and then identified and setup the printer automatically with no issues.
Doesn't support Airprint, but you can download (for free) the Dell mobile print app but it's terrible. To be fair, it works and you can use it to print from a iPad or iPhone but it's very fiddly to do and I ended up printing from a computer instead as it was less hassle. The other half has no issues with the app though and quite happily prints from the iPad all the time (must just be me that doesn't like the app!)
Very surprised with the print quality of this - although technically it's an LED printer rather than a laser, the print quality is very, very good. For simple colour like excel spreadsheets or web pages then the output is excellent. For photographs, then the resolution isn't as good (as you may expect) but it's certainly more than acceptable for quick prints and previews on cheap A4 paper. If you want something that will do that will do full photo quality prints then this probably won't be the printer for you.
In use, it's reasonably quick, and although it's noisy when printing it's nothing louder than any other printer. It does hum for a short time after a print as it cools down.
If you fold away the paper trays then it's a square black box that sits quietly in a corner. It does an excellent job for all round home printing in colour - it's fast, very good print quality and cheap to purchase and run.
I bought this printer due to the positive reviews - I dont usually comment on items but this thing is beyond a joke
I've worked in I.T most my life so I think I can tell a good printer from a bad one. I've done all the usual checks to make sure there is no bits of paper stuck in the guts of the printer, I've changed paper types & weights, cleaned the tray out - everything! And it still jams. It doesn't even load the paper and reports a jam. When it does decide to print (after refreshing the job about 20 odd times) it will randomly print, the quality of the prints are fine, no problems..... but its getting the thing to actually print is a problem!
Setting up Wireless is easy but the instructions are a bit complex ( too many options), "Auto SSID Setup" from the Users Manual on CD worked good for me ( I have WEP with a passphrase on my wireless). Entering the passphrase by scrolling thru characters with the arrow keys is a bit tedious, but it works. Turn off and on the printer to save your settings.
Pres the + sign in your printer settings on the Mac to add the printer, it should be there as an option to select if your wireless setup worked.
AND, best part, very nice quality silent, fast colour printing. I bought at 50% off, its now at 60% off, Whats the catch?, probably the toner prices!, Still very happy with this printer, Great value.
