HASH(0x96a8460c) out of 5 stars Freedom from Me-dom 13 Sept. 2008
By Larry Shallenberger - Published on
Format: Paperback
Zimmerman has written a superb book that somehow successful blends clever wit with deep introspection-- not an easy feat. David summons Bonhoeffer,Merton, and his own adventures in narcissism to describe our inability to save ourselves from self-centeredness.

Deliver Us From Me-Ville is a smooth read. Don't mistake that last sentence as code for saying that the book is fluff. There are passages in the book that command repeat readings.

HASH(0x96a84660) out of 5 stars Great advice offered by "Me-Ville" 18 Sept. 2008
By Laura M. Damon - Published on
Format: Paperback
From the first paragraph of the first chapter to the last, this book is a humorously insightful read. Sprinkled with well-distributed quotes, references and an abundance of real-life experience, "Deliver Us From Me-Ville" takes a real look at the trappings of self-centeredness and the various "escape routes" not only leading to other-centeredness but to the ultimately valuable and important goal of a truly Christ-centered life. Individuals in American society will easily relate to the ease with which we get caught up in our own personal supposed utopia, our "Me-Ville". Zimmerman, however, offers solutions to change our lives in order to better ourselves and others; to live in a way more pleasing to the Lord--the way He intends for us to live.

HASH(0x96a84a98) out of 5 stars A Winsome, Piercing and Relevant Read 6 Nov. 2008

Format: Paperback
Zimmerman fiercely and humorously explores how he gets hoodwinked by his own ego and by the palace lies of our day. His story quickly invites us to reflect on our own. He teams his candor with reflections from ancient sages and modern day muses. One of my favorite aspects of the book is that he includes practical "escape routes" -- questions and actions we can engage to be liberated from our own Me-Ville. Great read.

HASH(0x96a84e64) out of 5 stars Cool Christian guidebook 28 Feb. 2013

Great book to get one thinking about whether you're living in Me-Ville, or if you're truly living for God. I found the chapters to go by, always leaving me with something I could really chew on, ponder, and apply to my life. I think I discovered wonderful insight on how to always keep Christ at the center of your life, and never let the relationship stray.

"The kingdom of God is firmly established because it's the place where our God reigns. Me-Ville is not. Me-Ville is where superbia reigns; it's a place from which we must escape."
(Deliver Us from Me-Ville, Introduction)

Note: The book has several references to popular, secular media. Most instances added additional humor to the point the author is trying to illustrate. Just thought I'd mention this fact for anyone that could be offended by reading about celebrities and TV shows in a Christian guidebook.

Overall, it's a great book that I'm glad I found!

HASH(0x96a84e10) out of 5 stars To Me or Not To Me 13 Jan. 2013

I can't remember ever reading anything more thought provoking or spot on about our culture's benchmarking narcissism than David Zimmerman's Deliver Us From Me-Ville. The length and transparency Zimmerman goes through to show just how self absorbed we as Christians and society in general are is astounding and at times overwhelming, but he nudges us with the grace and love of redemption and shows just what length Jesus goes through to deliver us from Me-Ville.
I can't imagine anyone not being blown away by this book. Be warned will be challenged and your ego will suffer the consequences thereof.
