Excellent singing, a good recording and nice conducting, teamed with the bargain price, makes this a very good set.
Joan Sutherland sounds fresh and vibrant, singing the Bell Song and the Duet with considerable skill.
In 1967 she was probably at her best. Earlier, in the late 1950's and early 60's her voice was magically young and strong but her diction could be rather poor. While later, during the 1970's and 1980's her diction improved but her voice lost some of its strength. Here her diction is improved and her voice remains totally young and glittering ( this set was recorded around the same time as her recording of "La fille du regiment" with Pavarotti, which proves to be amongst her finest recordings). Her supportive cast is very strong, especially the French tenor Alain Vanzo. His voice is light and golden, ideal for the role of Gerald.
The recording is good and the conducting by Richard Bonynge, Sutherland's husband, proves very strong.
For the price this is an excellent set, it remains one of the best recordings of this opera at any price.

You have to hear it to believe it.
Bought this after I heard the flower duet in a film and have listened to it so much that I actually know the melodies.
That's scary as I don't ever listen to opera!

I enjoyed this opera so much. It is so melodical and beautiful. Normally I don't like the whole operas, just some parts in them. Lakme is something you can listen from the begining to the end withought switching to the next song. Can absolutely reccommend it.Delibes: Lakmé

Lakme may not be the grandest of operas, but this recording shows why it remains a favourite with many opera lovers. Sutherland is magnificent; her effortless high notes, perfect diction and musicality make this my definitive "Lakme".

The music on the CD is great but it is obviously an old inferior quality recording. Coughing can be heard from the audience etc but this at times adds charm to the performance. In short a winsome and enjoyable piece which makes up for modern hi fidelity with charm and atmosphere.

How could anyone find fault with this, the music, the lyrics, the performers...it is just beautiful. The 'listening notes direct you straight to the well known flower duet, but it needs to be listened to all the way through and you can download a translation from the net if it helps.

I bought this CD to add to a growing collection of classical works. It does not disappoint in any way on a high-end hi-fi system and the neighbours have grown to love it too!

Like a say, if you're a fan of this legendary opera, or not very familiar with it, you'll love this CD. Obviously if you're find the music a brilliant listen. I bought this CD due to a little accidental damage to the last copy i had. If you've heard the popular and loved 'duet' & 'the bell song' i can near enough guarantee you'll be impressed with the full CD.

For the price of this 2 disc set you can't really complain at all, especially you add that to the crystal clear recording. The vocals on top of that are excellent and is all sung beautifully (just wait till you hear Joan Sutherland). Also just the general orchestral music, is conducted to perfection.

All i can say is it's a beautiful set to have in your collection, and I'm sure you'll enjoy this as much as i have and still am time and time again. A definitive piece to buy. Go and purchase it now!!
