Calvin and Eric are both desperately in love with each other.
Eric is reluctant to show his true feelings for fear of rejection and Calvin is unable and physically incapable of showing his!!!
The things Calvin had been subjected to in his past meant that although he loved Eric, the thought of acting on it made him sick.
The couple of times in the past when they had kissed, Eric put the nausea down to alcohol, not wanting to admit that Calvin might really find him that repulsive.
When their friends won't let up anymore and try to force them together, the truth that Calvin reveals is almost too painful to hear.
When you love someone though, you stick with them, no matter the consequences.....
It is truly disturbing to know that this practice is not a work of fiction.
The pain that we feel Calvin go through is very real for some people and that is why this story made me cry.
How is this allowed to go on.....
Together the men fight the nightmares every step of the way, even when someone from the past comes back to haunt Calvin.
This story is proof of how powerful true love is.
5 out of 5 stars.
Okay this is book 6 in the 69 Bottles series. There is no need to read the other books before this one, but it might help give you a bit of insight into how the others, Talon, Kyle, Addison, Raine, and Dex, see Eric and Calvin. Its also a single, finished story.
I can't write a blurby bit, not for this book, I'm just jumping straight in.
I wanted to read Eric and Calvin's story, right from the first 69 Bottles book. I knew their story was gonna be amazing, and I was not disappointed.
It is told in the first person, and present tense AND multi POV, however, as in all these books, it hasn't bothered me. In fact, I would have been disappointed if it was written any other way.
But what absolutely made this for me, what made it such a heart wrenching, tearful, cheerful read, was the research that Ms Derrick must have undertaken. Because it shows! I mean I have a teeny tiny clue that these things happened at some point in time, that they, probably, are somewhere still going on. But I have no clue, none at all how it might affect someone, how, even after ten years, it can affect someone. How one would go about not fixing, because you can't fix someone who isn't broken, about how you go about correcting all the damage done, how you go about having a normal relationship after all that went on. How you deal, as a partner to someone who has been through what Cal went through, how you deal with that. It broke my heart for Cal, but equally for Eric.
What I also liked, perversely, was that the tour and the bank take second stage in this book. I mean in the other books, the tour is paramount, its front and centre.Read more ›
I really don’t know where to start with this review, and I will try my best to keep it as brief as possible, but that will be hard as there is so much to say, I will also try to get through this review without shedding more tears, yes be warned this book will require tissues.
Author Zoey Derrick is an amazing lady, having read all of the other books in the 69 Bottles series I was ecstatic to receive an ARC of Defining Us; as soon as it arrived on my kindle everything else was dropped and I was in hibernation reading mode. If you have read the other books in the series, you will know that Zoey Derrick does not shy away from taboo subjects, and this book is no different, it is not the gay relationship that is the taboo matter, it is the history of one of the characters that really opens your eyes and has you wanting to climb into the book to hug away his pain.
From the first word to the last full stop I was engrossed in Calvin and Eric’s story, and couldn’t believe the array of emotions 369 pages lead to; and on a side note, how fitting that the 69 bottles series ended on a book with 369 pages! The book deals with love, heartache, betrayal, frustration, anger, anxiety, grief and everything in between, and it is done so amazingly, that it was easy to get lost in this book and forget that these characters were not real, I felt emotionally invested in this book, and although tears were shed aplenty - causing a massive headache - I could not put the book down until it was finished.
The depth and raw emotions the characters went through could be felt through every word, and ultimately the passion between the characters was off the charts hottttt.Read more ›
