This book is a fine ending to the McKinnon rangers. A lovely story that sees Lady Sarah kidnapped by indians and rescued by Connar McKinnon. She is torn from a sheltered life in London and unprepared for the harshness of the frontier or for the attraction towards Connor. When she reaches civilization however, it is she who must protect him.
I really liked Connor's story, Im not really sure which book I liked the best, Iain's, Morgans or Connors. They were all very good in their own right. I was glad to see at the end of the book that Iain and Annie and Morgan and Amalie were encluded in the story. A lovely ending too.
I was hoping Joseph might get a story but there is nothing mentioned. We can always hope.
I find Pamela Clare's writing never insults the reader's intellingence and she does not cut corners on plot, facts and, of course, the sexy bits. If you've never really read "romance" before, don't be put off by any perception of smushy, weak, kissy-wissy love tales - the MacKinnon series is layered with rich characters, intruiging story lines and a full journey that doesn't leave you hanging - and of course, the leading men will get your pulse racing!
Defiant is one of my favourite reads and clearly my number 1 of the MacKinnon series. We find the youngest MacKinnon "cub" Connor taking centre stage as the type of man we all want - strong, wild and rebellious but with a soft, romantic heart and a rod of iron! Forced into fighting for "King & Country" by the unscrupulous English Lord Wentworth, Connor and his "Mohican" blood-brother Joseph, are sent to rescue the Lord's niece, Lady Sarah, after her abduction at the hands of an enemy Native American tribe. Fully expecting to loath Lady Sarah, as a spoilt young woman of nobel privilege and enemy blood line, Connor finds himself protecting not only her life but her honor. As he saves her from a life of enslavement, he sees her strength, vulnerability and beauty and his heart betrays his head to fall completely in love with her during their perilous journey "home".
Whilst the romance evolves perfectly, the value of the book is in the narrative that surrounds the love story - the history, the landscapes, the brutality of the era and, importantly, the relationships between even the minor characters add such a richness to the read that you should find yourself hooked from page 1. Whilst this book can stand alone and provide a great journey on its own, the trilogy is best read in order - one of the reasons I favour Defiant over its 2 prequels is the growth in Connor's character. In the first book, Surrender, we meet him in his very early 20s, full of ignorance, brawn and attitude. In Defiant, we find a more mature Connor, still gobby and headstrong but the responsibilities for the lives of his men ... and his woman.
This is a MUST of a read! :-D
