This has to be one of the most clear and concise guides to Bridge Defence around. If you put into practice what you read here you will be a top bridge player. Brilliant book. Actually my fifth copy as bridge friends keep coveting it and I lend it out and never get it back. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for me 24 Aug. 2014

I have four other bridge books by Barbara and this one has worked best for me. The format is perfect for me: short introductions followed by very user-friendly quizzes. The notes and comments about each quiz are VERY helpful. I learn more when the content is in a applied format (e.g. quizzes) rather than just presented in paragraphs. I need practice to grasp the message. I appreciate Barbara's effort to provide information about bridge. However I've had a tough time understanding her 25-series books, in part because of my novice level of expertise and partly because of the bridge-short-cut vocabulary that I didn't understand. This book, for me, is more easily understood. I plan to purchase other of Barbara's books that use this Quizbook format.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is excellent! 28 Feb. 2014
By Errol Hartman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I've been playing bridge for about 5 years, having been a tournament chess player previously. (Bridge fits better with marriage that chess, especially when you can get your spouse to play with you!) Currently, I have about 25 master points, and play duplicate about 3x/month. I have the basics of Audrey Grant down for bidding, but I'm just beginning to learn about defense. Defense is universally thought to be the most difficult part of the game. Other books I've started throw too much information at me at once, and I've had a difficult time simply trying to memorize everything they say. Seagram and Bird's book presents a small nugget of information on each hand, and before you know it, you're learning something! I've worked my way up to hand #48, and when I finish, I'm going to go through the book another time. Many beginning duplicate players seem to make the mistake of trying to add as many conventions as possible to their repertoire, but the basics of defense will certainly occur quite a bit more often than esoteric conventions, and will score quite a few more points in a duplicate game over time. (You play defense 50% of the time!) Although the cover states, "Newcomer/ Intermediate" level, I highly recommend this book to anyone with less that 100 masterpoints.

5.0 out of 5 stars happy I bought it 14 Sept. 2015

I teach beginner party bridge players. This book is a little over their heads. These students are actually in their 3rd year of lessons, so they aren't truly novices, but this is more for the wanting to get serious player than the social player.
I can say I really enjoyed it though!
