Product Description

A man's home is his castle, or so the saying goes, but could it withstand an attack by Attila and the Huns, Ragnar and the Vikings, Alexander and the Greeks, Genghis Khan and the Mongols, or Tamerlane and the Tartars? Backyard Ballistics author William Gurstelle poses this fascinating question to modern-day garage warriors and shows them how to build an arsenal of ancient artillery and fortifications aimed at withstanding these invading hordes. Each chapter introduces a new bad actor in the history of warfare, details his conquests, and features weapons and fortifications to defend against him and his minions. Clear step-by-step instructions, diagrams, and photographs show how to build a dozen projects, including "Da Vinci's Catapult," "Carpini's Crossbow," a "Crusader-Proof Moat," "Alexander's Tortoise," and the "Cheval-de-frise." With a strong emphasis on safety, the book also gives tips on troubleshooting, explains the physics behind many of the projects, and shows where to buy the materials. By the time they've reached the last page, at-home defenders everywhere will have succeeded in creating a fully fortified home.

HASH(0x97c90600) out of 5 stars Helpful and Humorous 26 Jun. 2014
By Angus Laird - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The easy flow and style of this book make it a fun read. But, more importantly it is chock full of useful information on historically valuable tools and technology for defending your ground. I plan to experiment with a variety of these projects and do some innovating of my own. Others concerned about preparing for a less kind and gentle future may want to consider buying this book and doing the same thing!

HASH(0x952a70c0) out of 5 stars This is a fun book for those who like to tinker 23 Oct. 2014

This is a fun book for those who like to tinker. The projects involved require different skills and aptitudes, so there is something for everyone. It was slightly disappointing that some of the devices included were only tabletop models; although the cheval de fries pencil holder was charmingly unexpected.

HASH(0x952a5fa8) out of 5 stars I Like The Moat - 30 Sept. 2014
By Jim in California - Published on Amazon.com

I was curious about the contents so I bought the book. Most of the suggestions are a bit overboard but some are right on. I'm thinking of what to put in the moat, alligators or piranhas. Can't have both.

A book that every home owner should have ,when it comes to defending against invaders. even though the weapons are what we would say today are primitive Yet ,it is foundation of the modern day weapons ,and I quote "THE FIRST WEAPONS WERE THE BEST WEAPONS."

HASH(0x95a84084) out of 5 stars I love this book 17 Sept. 2015

Wow, I love this book. Be warned though you will feel an urge to build a moat and wall around your house once your done reading this. The history inter cut with great projects you can use to defend your self. Now unfortunately some of the projects require a lot of work to scale up to size but other than that this is a great book if you love history or preparing for the end of the world
