Product description
Manufacturer's Description
If you've been dreaming about paradise, we know a place where you can make those dreams come true--the Island of Banoi. Just off the coast of Papua New Guinea, located south of the Equator and just north of Australia.
A paradise to die for
Until very recently much of the island was wild and primitive and totally untouched by the modern world. Even though the capital, Moresby, was founded by Australian settlers in 1895, many places deep in the interior still have never been seen by western eyes.
As a guest of the Royal Palms Resort, the player's stay was supposed to be a dream holiday; a luxurious getaway to the beautiful beaches of a tropical paradise. But faced with the reality of a zombie apocalypse, there is only one thing left to do: Survive.
This is Dead Island... a paradise to die for.
Terror. Violence. Madness.
Terror. Violence. Madness. Bedlam. A holiday paradise gone mad. A tropical island turns into total chaos after a mysterious zombie outbreak. Cut off from the rest of the world, the player’s only chance to survive is to fight to the death and find a way to escape from the island.
Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customisation of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to four players in co-op mode.
Set in an open world tropical island, hordes of different festering zombies await players around every corner while they embark on a variety of thrilling missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition being scarce the player must rely on utilising found items as weapons for self-defence and fight off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform the player’s ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction.
In addition to satisfying even the most bloodthirsty action fan’s fantasy, Dead Island also features role-playing elements which allow the player to develop one of the game’s unique character classes according to their preferences, all the while learning new skills and fresh tactics during their journey through the perilous environments of the island. What’s more, anytime during a game up to four players can seamlessly join together and experience the intense combat and immersive story with cooperative gameplay.
With the all-new Chrome Engine 5 powering Dead Island, the game will use the latest installment of Techland’s acclaimed proprietary game engine, allowing the player to experience the tropical island paradise in graphical splendour with diverse environments like lush forests and detailed city environments.

I have only played 3 or 4 hours so far, but I am already hooked. The graphics are sensational. The island of Banoi is absolutely stunning, with sandy white beaches and beautiful blue sky. If it wasn't for the hordes of zombies lurking around every corner I could spend hours just walking around taking everything in.
So far I have completed half a dozen missions and they have ranged from very easy to slightly challenging. I'm sure as the story progresses so will the mission difficulty. This will be helped by the character levelling, which is done by the usual way of gaining XP (experience points) for completing missions, killing zombies etc. These can then be used to upgrade various aspects of your character. I also like being able to upgrade & create new weapons, this adds more depth to the game.
As has been previously mentioned there are a few minor niggles. Firstly I don't think the instruction manual is as good as it could be. I had to search the internet to find out how to change what weapons are available for selection on the weapon wheel (you only have two weapon slots available to start with), it is done via the Map screen for anyone else having the same trouble. Also when a zombie gets up close and personal it took a while to work out how to shake them off, as you can't seem to punch or kick them (I have discovered that RT & LT together work). Another niggle is that when you are killed, you aren't re-animated from where you died and also you can be dropped in the middle of a horde of zombies, resulting in you being killed again instantly.
Overall though this a fun game to play (I particularly enjoy decapitating zombies with one swing of a meat cleaver) and is well worth the reduced price.
The controls are excellent, the graphics very very good and the zombies are the best I have ever seen. Their actions are mixed and actually quite scary to a point - and I'm not saying that I cried or hid under the covers or anything! But they are unpredictable and quite quite crazy at times. Standing still groaning at one point, before clenching their fists, growling and going rigid, and then steaming into you like a freight train with in uncontrolled fury! Brilliant! Certainly made me jump on more than one occasion.
The beauty if this game is that you can do as many or little of the side missions as you see fit. You can free roam around the island, undertake small missions and revert to the main mission at the click of a button in your mission list. I have played the game for 2 days solid doing mainly side missions, and I've only completed 8% of the main game. This is excellent, as you can decide how much you get into and you can get a sense of accomplishment with only an hour or so of gameplay. This is similar to Far Cry 3 with the free roam aspect.
I really do think that this game is brilliant. I was a little sceptical at first after having read so e of the reviews on this site, but after having loaded the game into my Xbox (I saved mine to the HDD), I was more than pleasant,y surprised. And yes, it is quite hard at times, even on the normal setting, but surely that's part of the challenge?
Buy the game, it's well worth every penny.
