'Declan' starts with a bang, and a powerful charge of passion. You're swept straight into the traumatic aftermath of Declan's return to civilian life; the confusion he feels between his desire to protect his dead mate's widow, and the equally understandable desire to feel again after months of numbness, is told in graphic and very effective prose.

Australian Declan's old mates, his army buddies, are getting on with their lives (all except Max, whose escape into death leaves Declan consumed with guilt over his failure to protect his friend, both on the battlefield and after they returned home). In an attempt to put it all behind him he takes to the road on his motorbike, and ends up running a small pub in the Outback. It isn't long before he realises he's strayed right into the middle of a war between bike gangs, and that the girl with whom he's begun a gentle and fragile love affair belongs to one of the gangs. Before long he's having to use all the skills he learned in Afghanistan to survive, and keep his lover safe.

Declan and his mates are not always the good guys. They are fully prepared to use their wartime skills to manage their civilian lives, and they all make decisions that could land them into serious trouble with the law. They're used to working as a team, though, and none of them will let the others down. This is the first in Ava Manello's Wounded Heroes series, and I look forward to the others if they're as well written as this one.

This was my first read by Ava Manello and I can say I was hooked instantly wanting more!
So I believe I may I have read them out of order but I started with Declan as I liked the sound of it... this book has a huge mix between Military/MC which is right up my street.
So we start of with Declan and his time in teb military which you can imagine isn't plain sailing and full of fun.. he comes home hounded by his demons and struggles to get over them.. hoping with his teams help he will overcome these terrors.
Then along comes Holly who kind of crashes into his life refusing to leave and not let go.
This book leaves us desperately wanting more so I'm ready to jump into book 2 which is Cameron's book right now!

Well, after my review of “Carnal Persuasion” when I asked “who the hell is Declan?”, I now have some, if not all, of the answers!

We pick up Declan’s story by finding out about his military background and what his life was like before he stepped down from active service. Now wondering what to do next with his life, and after facing his own demons, he tries to find happiness and in doing so ends up in Severed.

We already know some of the details of what happened after his arrival in Severed from Carnal Persuasion and that’s where the story dropped off for me. It simply felt like a recap of events from Carnal Persuasion from Declan’s POV. His dialogue was stilted and came across as an account of the facts rather than an in depth analysis of the story from his perspective. The book sadly lacked a fluidity and wasn't anywhere near as absorbing as the Severed MC book series, sadly. Both Holly and Declan lacked emotion and I didn’t connect with their characters at all.

So, returning to my first statement, we are in some ways still no clearer as to who Declan really is but at least we know where he came from.

Ava Manello has done it again. She teased us with a glimpse of Declan in Carnal Persuasion the 4th instalment of the Severed MC series and now we get to hear Declan' s story from his PIC.

I was hooked from page one and she really delivered how hard it must be for veterans from the Afghan war to come to terms with life in Civvy street and the terrible memories they bring back with them.

I loved the chemistry between Holly and Declan 2 troubled souls finding each other and finally coming together and sharing their troubles and nightmares.

I look forward to reading more in the Wounded Heroes series and the continuing journey of Declan and Holly.

This book was a new direction for Ava and Wow what a great read, the research alone can be seen in every page, I loved that we had a cross over between the Severed MC and Declan, but the insight into Declan was just fantastic we learn about PTSD and the struggle our boys can suffer after the trauma the have witnessed and gone through in there time out in Afghanistan. This is a great read and a wonderful tribute to our armed forces
This is also a fantastic love story between Declan and Holly.
You will not be disappointed.

I love everything about this book. The love, lust and of course the danger make it the perfect recipe for an addictive read. I love how Ava doesn't shy away from real issues and the impact things like military action can have on normal people. Completely in awe of how she handles the difficulties of these lads and yet also paints the dedication they have to one another. Definitely recommend!
