Product Description

Black & Decker 18v Lithium Ion Strimmer

strimmer

The Black & Decker STC1815 strimmer is one of Black & Decker’s range of garden power tools. This 18V Lithium Ion strimmer can be used for trimming excess grass growing against a wall, fence, flowerbed or pathway and gives the borders of your lawn a neat and tidy finish. Designed to be lightweight and flexible to tackle the toughest areas in only a small amount of time, it uses technology that facilitates the trimming process and increases your productivity.

Power, speed, comfort and control
strimmer

Powered by E-Drive technology, the lightweight Black & Decker STC1815 strimmer boasts a high torque gear system and 18V Lithium Ion battery driven motor to power through tough, overgrown areas quickly and without clogging. Its high-speed action cuts a 25 cm swathe for fast job completion over large areas, and its edging guide wire gives you the precision you need for neater lawn edges every time. In addition, the STC1815 has a telescopic shaft that allows you to match the strimmer optimally to your height and an adjustable second handle that provides the ultimate in comfort and control.

Intelligent technology

When strimming, the STC1815 has an impressive 6200 rpm line cutting speed, and features Black & Decker’s Trim ‘n’ Edge technology, allowing you to convert easily from trimming to edging mode (and back again) by simply unlocking and twisting the pole.

Designed to be used with the CM100-XJ Mower Deck (this can be purchased separately), an easy-to-attach, lightweight wheeled base, that allows you to use your strimmer like a mower, for easier and more consistent cutting in small gardens.

Saving time, effort and space

While offering both power and precision, the STC1815 also features Black & Decker’s innovative, automatic single line feed system AFS (Auto Feed Spool) to save you time and effort, and comes complete with a 9 metre spool. What’s more, despite all the built in technology, the Black & Decker STC1815 only weighs 2.6 kg, making it ideal for storing up high or in smaller, less accessible areas.

Lithium Ion Batteries

The Black & Decker STC1815 Lithium Ion Grass Strimmer boasts an 18 V 1.5Ah lithium ion battery. Each battery is tested for moisture ingress to ensure there is no chance of them shorting circuiting, as well as going through drop and vibration tests to ensure their durability. Contained within the battery pack are electronics that protect the battery against overcharging, as well preventing the battery from self discharging if it gets too hot or very cold. Black and Decker Lithium Ion batteries are designed to be ready to use when you are as there is no self discharge, they are also very light to ensure that you don’t tire whilst completing that DIY Task.

Smaller/Lighter – Lithium Ion batteries have a higher energy density than NiCD / NIMH batteries. This means that for an equivalent capacity Lithium Ion batteries are smaller and lighter than conventional NiCD / NIMH batteries. So whether you are choosing cordless garden tools, power tools or cordless home cleaning the Lithium Ion batteries will guarantee that your tool is lighter and more compact ensuring there is less chance you will suffer from fatigue.

Slow Discharge – Lithium Batteries have a very slow discharge rate compared to NiCD/Nimh batteries. After 90 days without use a Lithium Ion battery will still retain 80% of its charge. In comparison a NiCD/Nimh battery will only have retained about 10% of its charge. This means that you will always be ready to complete that DIY task without having to wait for the battery to charge.

No Memory Effect– When using NiCD/Nimh batteries it is recommended to fully discharge the battery prior to recharging them, which is not always very practical. Lithium Ion batteries do not suffer from memory effect, therefore can be recharged at any time without the battery suffering from “memory effect”.

Cold Temperature – Nimh batteries will not work at temperatures approaching freezing. Black and Decker Lithium Ion batteries will work at these temperatures ensuring that you are able to get the “job” done.

Recyclable - Lithium Ion batteries contain metal elements that are not harmful to the environment compared to other battery technology. All Lithium Ion batteries can be recycled at your local recycling centre.

I can not fault the design of this strimmer. It is lightweight and well thought out..
It is reasonably quite and has a nice telescopic handle which is good for the taller person.

I would only recommened it for light to medium use such as trimming flower boarders or edging on your lawn.
If you try to cut down anything too big it won't be up to the job and the battery life will last no time.
As it is lightweight, compact and easy to transport
It would be good to use around small allotments or for tending graves at the cemetry.
The only down side is the life of the battery. On a full charge you only get about 10 - 12 minutes strimming time on light to meduim use.
I would recommend that you buy another battery to go with it. I have bought another 18v 1.5Ah Li ion
Beware, even though they state it comes with a fast charger it's not!
To recharge a battery takes about 7hrs which is a pain. So charge it overnight ready for use the next day.

If you want a battery strimmer with a bit more beef then I would go for the 36v type.

I have had this strimmer for a few months now. I feel that I need to review this product and I am pleased to say for the better. In my previous comments I stated the the battery would only last for 10 -12 minutes.
The reason for that was becuase the battery charger had gone faulty and and wasn't giving the battery a full charge. The charger was duly replaced and now I can get twice the use from one battery.

So I retract my previous statement about the battery. I have now rated this product as a 5. Can not fault it.

Having read a few reviews I was a bit dubious about purchasing this cordless strimmer and looked at alternatives, but thanks to the other products being out of stock I took the leap and purchased this knowing that in the event of being unsatisfactory it could be returned.
But it will not be going back. Having left the battery to fully charge before the first use, I was very impressed with the results, the first thing to notice is how quite it was in operation, secondly whilst I don’t have the largest lawn it easily coped with the 85mts around the edge. it was easy to control and keep from diving into the grass, wanting to put it to the limit of the battery to check how much life was left in 1 charge for future reference, the stimmer was used on a plot of long grass I keep for the family pet, the strimmer cleared a 6m x 6m plot before finally stopping to protect the battery, far longer than expected (estimate 20 – 25 mins).
The auto feed line worked perfectly, rotating the head was a simple twist of a locking nut and takes up less storage space when retracted after use, it was easy to clean after use, the charger is intelligent and automatically tops up the battery if left on charge so a full battery is guaranteed to be waiting for use. I have used this 3 times now and achieved the same results, at the time of writing there has been a price drop also (just my luck). For those who may ask “does the Dewalt Li-ion batteries fit this strimmer the answer is no”.

I spent ages searching for a replacement for my 20 year old Flymo cordless strimmer. I eventually chose this one. I am very pleased with it, particularly it's lightness. The battery lasts for 25 mins or more. It coped well with the thick, long grass at my allotment. Not of course as effective as my friend's petrol strimmer but, hey, this is is light and battery powered. The cord is stronger and thicker than my old Flymo's cord so is lasting longer. An extra Li battery was a good investment - that way I get close to an hour of strimming.

It's light and easy to use, and does the jobs I need it to do pretty well (trimming round the edge of grass paths in my garden and keeping my allotment edges respectable), and saves me a lot of time and energy. It's not very strong and needs a full battery to cut the allotment paths but that was what I understood when I bought it, so it's fine, and I like it.

This is a simple, light-weight, well-constructed line trimmer. I've used both petrol and NiCad-battery-powered line trimmers before, and this is substantially lighter than anything I've previously experienced. It also collapses down handily via its extendible shaft, meaning it's easy to store after use (no more propping the thing up in a corner -- I can store it away on a shelf). The battery lasts a long time (I haven't managed to run it out, even after a solid 40 minute session) and is also much smaller and lighter than a NiCad equivalent. Construction seems solid (albeit almost totally plastic) and operation is a breeze.

However, for seriously overgrown areas it's a bit underpowered. I used it to tackle some very weedy areas on our allotment, and it struggled just as you might expect -- I'd say it's on par with other NiCad line trimmers, and in no way can it compete with a decent petrol-powered unit. It got the job done, but it was a matter of taking things carefully and slowly, and avoiding the more mature weeds altogether.

That said, on grass alone it's perfectly fine, and if you want convenience and portability then this is excellent value.
