I preordered the 'paperback' version of this book. It arrived today. It is, in fact, a wire ring-bound edition of the book (is there any other form? R & A Site hasn't got round to listing this one at all). This has resulted in the book being considerably bigger than the previous version. Also, just opening and closing it on a desk has not always been trouble-free on day one.

These books are designed to be carried by rules officials on the course. This one will not stand up to being crammed into a waterproof coat pocket like its predecessor. The contents are probably fine as usual but this won't help if the book becomes unusable. I'm just waiting to see if there is another version so I can return this one to Amazon. I probably should anyway as the price has dropped on the day I received it by £1.99!

We like to debate the nuances of the rules and this book is great for that. We buy a new one every two years when the rules are revised. This is the first time that the book has come with a ring binder and not the usual book bindings. This may be okay for using it 'on the move' but not so good at home as (a) it's more bulky on the book case and (b) the pages can fall out.

The biggest issue with this order was that we discovered about 30 pages were missing - hence my point above about them falling out. As the book is quite thick I didn't notice this when the order arrived and it wasn't until my husband was reading it that we realised there was a problem. I recommend that if you buy it, you check that all the pages are present as soon as it arrives or you could have problems with returning it should you not notice until later.

Having said that, the return service with Amazon was excellent - a new book (complete this time) was received the next date and we were sent a prepaid postage label to return the faulty book.

Only 3 stars due to it being faulty and we don't like the ring binder.

this book over the years has been a great source of understanding on the rules of golf, used it many times when making decisions in my role on the committee. Only 4 stars ?? i don't like the spiral binder, last book was slimmer and more practical. i read previous reviews on this issue and thought i was buying something different !!! but a must for golfers

Sorry D Ethelston you've got this wrong. Just got my version by post from the R & A and it's the larger ring bound version which you have received. Yes it is a bit bulky, but it's the official version and that's it. Don't send it back !!

Decisions on the Rules of Golf 2012

A must for all golfers. Despite what you think there is always something that happens when playing that you cannot find in the rules of golf.

I too was surprised when I received my copy to find that the publishers have moved away from the UK hardbound format to the spiral bound one which, I believe, has been in use in the U S of A already. It remains to be seen whether it is robust enough to survive intensive use out on the course or in the bar to solve those perennial questions.

That said it's a pre-requisite for anyone involved in golf from the casual hacker who wants to make sure they're playing by the rules to the die hard who just occasionally comes across an unusual situation and wonders just how they should proceed.

It also provides some scenarios that make you wonder whether they really have happened or whether they've been made up - just in case!

Essential reading for all keen golfers ,especially those who enjoy competitive golf at all levels. Useful for all golf club committee members who need to have a more in deepth knowledge than the average member and be more familiar with the rules. Remembering that you cannot fully rely on what you are told or think applies. Together with the fact that the Rules change or are modified frequently and a player has a responsibility to keep up. The new spiral book is much easier to use than the previous hard back versions. If you can't find it in this book I'll be surprised but in that event the R & A will always help out and point you in the right direction. You will learn something every time you open it up.

I strongly recommend that every golfer purchase a copy of this book, produced jointly by the R&A and the USGA. It is much easier and far more interesting to read than the difficult Rules of Golf book and will provide you with plentiful material for those après-golf exchanges in the Clubhouse or the bar. If you do not want to purchase a copy for your own use you should ensure that your Club or Society has at least one. It can provide a lot of entertainment over your post-game refreshments.
