If you didn't read the Caribbean Moon, go for it first. Because this one picks up a little later from when the 1st one finished. Deceitful Moon is a product more mature than the Caribbean Moon. It is more complex and has more suspense in it. I think Mr. Murcer is "revving up" on his writing if I may put it so. The dialogues are witty, the action is fast-paced (all this was in the first book as well) but it seems to me that the author ook more time in makin up the plot and all the story-lines. There are a couple of slip-ups, though. Such as mentioning one of the killer's names before it was officially known to the reader, even though it could be guessed at this stage anyway. I look forward to the 3rd book and something tells me it should be even more thought-out than the first two.

I read Caribbean Moon and enjoyed it. Deceitful Moon is equally good, if not better. The plot is rather far fetched on reflection but the characters are engaging and likeable, it is well written and amusing in places so just go along for the ride. It is very good, light, despite the subject matter, escapism.

A crime thriller that starts off well, then descends into improbability and a confusing plot line. Characters fall into unlikely immediate physical attraction, which integrates badly with the discipline required to investigate serious crimes. Then the book just ... finishes. Like I am going to do with this author.

I disagree with the reviewer (Gustave Flaubert) who found the plot line confusing. I think it is just the way Mr Murcer switches writing style between simple (good) and flowery (not good). I am going to try book three - he is improving. I think he needs a better editor - someone who would point out absurdities like this:

"Eric, for the hundredth time, speculated about the purpose, and maybe more importantly, the reason, for being bound in this room."

There are parts of this book which flow superbly - and, Mr Murcer, they are the parts when you write unpretentiously. There are however constant irritations with inappropriate adjectives - only a few lines after the above line poor Eric has a "horrifying chill up his spine". I think this should be "horrified", and any half-way competent editor and/or proofreader should spot it.

This book is an improvement on Caribbean Moon - so one more chance, I think.
