The writing is absolutely atrocious in this book. Dropped before I even finished reading the sample. The story itself might actually be okay, and the heroine does give off the impression of being tough-as-nails, however the book is written in such a way that you can't reallly figure out what's going on in the scene and how things that happen are possible. Here's a couple of examples: at one point the heroine is waiting for her friend to grab lunch in the cafeteria, while apparently standing somewhere out of the way. Apparently there's some kind of stage in the cafeteria as well and she was standing near it. She ends up being shoved by someone (despite no one apparently wanting to even be near her) and somehow she slips on the fresh blood, breaking the summoning circle that was drawn by some goth kids. Yes, apparently else is blind in this schools since goth kids can draw summoning circles in blood in the cafeteria during lunch. Another example: the heroine beats up one hellhound with an aluminium baseball bat, despite that same hellhound being able to break through the doors that this baseball bat was holding, _bending_ the bat in the prossess. She also manages to break the neck of another hellhound, by doing some sort of acrobatic move while wounded in the stomach. Now for the kicker: these hellhounds are apparently taller than she is. Still not enough? How about her having a social worker looking after her that just so conviniently belongs to what seems like a demon fighting order? Social workers are amazing, yes, but surely not _that_ amazing?

Okay, end rant. If you're interested - read the sample and judge for yourself.

HASH(0x94110e04) out of 5 stars Christina Liam is like the illegitimate love child of Buffy Summers and Jessica ... 15 Jan. 2016
By Christy Horton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Christina Liam is like the illegitimate love child of Buffy Summers and Jessica Jones. She has a death wish that she didn't make, or promise to keep. Instantly lovable with her dark side and humor to match, she's like the best friend you never wanted, willing to die for you. Literally. Constant balls-to-the-walls action and quick-witted dialogue make it a great read. Can't recommend it enough and anxiously await the rest of the series!

HASH(0x93b720e4) out of 5 stars A wonderful and gritty read! 9 Feb. 2016

Death's Reject by C L Foltermann
Christina is a high school student orphaned at age 6. She is a cynical 16-year-old with a lot of rage and sarcasm. She is fiercely independent and strong willed.

At a young age she has been through enough to make anyone cynical. Everyone that she cares for leaves. She has a knack for finding trouble and kicking butt. When she faces the stuff nightmares are made of, this tough Chic with the smart mouth, pulls off what some think is impossible. She is then let into a world few know exist. Here's the clincher she's special and she has no idea how much. She would do anything to keep the people she cares about safe but she can't help always finding trouble. Her thick skin and locked away heart help to keep her safe but how long can you realistically maintain a frozen exterior.

Kenneth Wails is her social worker and all around nice normal guy. He has been her social worker for the last five years and, she starting to wonder when he's going to take his leave. After all, they all do. But this one is tenacious, and has some secrets of his own.

When Kenneth sees Christina's potential, he calls a group in New York and has her tested.
Does he even realize he's playing with dynamite? Her skills are beyond anyone’s expectations and she survives and, thrives where anyone else would not make it alive.

After meeting Thomas O'Reilly a good looking guy/ Vampire she can't get away from, she meets the Vampires Queen of the city and is recruited to help find missing kids and vampire fledglings. The problem is Thomas is also looking into the missing and is sticking to her like glue. With an order to shoot Thomas on sight, what is she supposed to do with him? She makes friends with him.

I admire this character I like that she is really tough, really cynical, and she's full of spit and vinegar. This book is really gritty and not for any reader under like 14. I would absolutely recommend this to a friend. Cannot wait to read what comes next!

HASH(0x948204bc) out of 5 stars dirty, strong 20 Jan. 2016

Do yourself a favor, and buy this book. I finally got it in the mail today, and I didn't put it down until I was completely finished. The story's protagonist is messy, dirty, strong, so very, very human, and an absolute joy to follow. She's basically everything I've ever needed in a heroine. Foltermann has expertly blended mystery, action, horror, and humor into a sharp, modern retelling of age old stories of loss, challenge, personal strength, and unbreakable spirit. If we're being real here, I needed volume 2 yesterday. Buy this book! You won't be disappointed!

HASH(0x94113510) out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down! 10 Feb. 2016

Not really a fan of vampire stories but this was so good. I had to tear myself away from it every time I started reading. One of those " one more chapter then I will go to sleep" books. I couldn't wait to see what happened to Christina next. I am already looking forward to the next book.
HASH(0x93ce8bb8) out of 5 stars All Bark and ALL Bite!! 16 July 2016

Foltermann's protagonist is the 2010s-Buffy we've needed. Though her mouth always gets her into trouble, her savvy carries the reader through an exciting mystery filled with demons, vampires, and sass!!
This is a great read for those who love the supernatural, or those who enjoy a snarky, lead who punches first ... and asks questions during.
