Peter Ustinov stars as detective Hercule Poirot in this classic British thriller adapted from the novel by Agatha Christie. Set in the 1930s, the film follows Poirot as he hunts a killer responsible for the murder of a rich heiress aboard a steamship travelling down the Nile. After discovering that a number of the passengers had a reason to kill her, Poirot faces a race against time to solve the case before the ship reaches port. The cast also includes Jane Birkin, Bette Davis and Mia Farrow.

Taking a common Christie outline of a group of characters in a specific location, a murder and a reason for almost every character to want the victim dead, Hercule Poirot is left to deduce the truth!
For me, the film is just a perfect combination of a complicated whodunit script with a healthy dose of humour mixed in, an absolutely perfect cast across the board (Angela Lansbury in particular is outstanding as a boozy novelist of dubious romantic fiction) and an exotic grand location in which to bump the cast off. The new Blu-ray edition gives the film a terrrific extra shine making it look brand new again.
Extras run about an hour, comprising a 22 minute vintage featurette consisting of interviews with cast and crew during production (which was on the previous DVD release) alongside new interviews with costume designer Anthony Powell, Dame Angela Lansbury and producer Richard Goodwin. There’s also a couple of still image galleries to flick through.

There are screen legends in this film, such a Bette Davis, Maggie Smith and Peter Ustinov as Belgian detective Poiroit is fantastic.
Agatha Christie's book is followed well and there are plenty of images of the faluccas sailing in the Nile past the Cataract Hotel where she is said to have written the book. There are even shots of Egyptian boys bearing their bottoms on the shores to the passing steam boat (The Karnak) still in use today.
The transfer to Blu Ray is excellent, I must point out that the sleeve is written for the Scandinavian market with synopses in Danish, Norwegian and Swedish.
This does not affect the enjoyment as you still have wonderful Dolby 5.1 soundtrack with the lovely music by Nino Rotta.
A lovely film all in all.
Interesting to note that most of the male cast are no longer with us, with the exception of George Kennedy who is 90, but most of the female cast are, apart from Bette Davis who was 70 when it was made.
I agree that it is a pity there are no sub-titles with this DVD.
