Magson's Inspector Lucas Rocco series brilliant depictions of the France of the early 1960s. Rocco, an understated and classy detective, is an interesting moral counterpoint to the chicanery and devious plotting of the government and interior ministry. The mysterious Clos du Lac private sanatorium is the site of a murder that Rocco, despite being warned to steer clear of, cannot withstand the temptation to investigate. The series stands out from a lot of modern detective fiction because of labyrinthine plotting and believable, interesting characterization, and this is the best book of the bunch.

This is a very accomplished Crime Thriller by the excellent writer Adrian Magson. His character Inspector Lucas Rocco now in his fourth outing is a growing name in crime fiction. Magson flits between writing these police procedurals set in 1960's France and a series of modern day spy thrillers.
This is by far the best Rocco book to date; the detective is comfortable in his rural surroundngs having been transfered in the first episode from Paris. The writing is more action thriller centred as political intrigue spills over again into this agricultural setting. The police side is well established with trusty colleagues and even a better working relationship with his boss.
The story centres on a murder at a private sanitorium which a government department tries to suppress; this only spurs Rocco on to investigation ministerial cover-ups and conspiracies. Especially as he learns that rather than responding to events the Ministry may be orchestrating matters for more shader purposes.
This series is getting stronger and the plots do justice to a modern readers desire for action and danger, however this is another era and as a result the books are a wonderful counterpoint to the many similar comtemporary crime novels which seem to try to out do each other with darker writing. Consequently, Magsons Rocco novels will delight and provide a sense of rest, amid the action and thrills within its pages.

Without a doubt this is the best of the Inspector Rocco series. The author invokes the atmosphere of Picardie in the 1960s very well, mixing the grey anonymous men of some shadowy Parisian French ministry with the country flics such as Inspector Rocco as the latter investigates a strange murder. Good tension is maintained throughout and the story builds well to a satisfying conclusion that hints at further developments in the next book. Highly recommended. Incidentally, I much prefer these Rocco books to the spy book by the same author.

I really love the Inspector Rocco series and this book does not disappoint. The action is set in 1960's France and you get a real sense of time and place. I agree with the suggestion that Rocco is France's answer to 'Jack Reacher'. The writing is fast paced from beginning to end and the different threads of the plot are easy to follow. Rocco is a likeable hero and the small cast of recurring characters are well written. If you like straightforward murder mysteries and in a sleepy location I highly recommend this series.

A complex and engaging plot, full of suspense and action. The book made me want to read all the earlier Inspector Lucas Rocco books which I've now done and they are all excellent. Lucas is a great character.
