I chose this having read it as a teenager. Reading it now I can see why it affected me so deeply being deeply spiritual and uplifting. It is based on truth and from the research Taylor Caldwell made on her visits to the Holy Land and over the forty two years she took to refine the story. I did find the continual descriptions of the surroundings Luke was in tiring after a while, but who am I to criticize in any way what many describe as a masterpiece. It made me want to read St Luke's gospel immediately after finishing the book, wanting to stay in touch with the spirit of Luke who finally finds happiness within, after a tortured life, mostly of his own making. Caldwell seemed to get into the mind of this complicated man, and the people he finds along the way. By the end, I knew why it had resonated with me for all these years and I'm truly delighted to have made its acquaintance again.

I read an abridged Readers Digest version of this book as a teenager and was so enthralled by it I used it in my Higher English exam. Forty years later my minister asked session to read Luke's Gospel. I then felt compelled to read Dear and Glorious Physician again. At first it was not available on Kindle but I kept checking and a few months later got it.

The book gives a lot of background on Luke's early years building a picture of him and his struggles with his beliefs. But God is always with him as he makes his way through life towards becoming a Christian.

Definitely a book to uplift the spirit.

This is a birthday gift for a friend, who is a church minister. Another friend, also a church minister found the book fascinating and very informative. I have also read the book myself, and found that the description of the culture, and history complements the bible accounts, and other historical books of the same period.

This is a lovely fictional book based on the facts of the life of St Luke. It captures the life and spirit of the times and places he lived, and follows his personal struggles to understand his medical skills and the strange link he has with the Unknown God. I bought this for a friend who has never read it before but finds him an interesting character. It is not what I would call a religious book, but it does have a deep underlying spiritual strength which enriches the story.

The only drawback is that this edition is big. I had expected a standard sized paperback (I didn't read the dimensions, so it is my fault really) and I would have preferred a smaller copy as it is more handy.

Bought on behalf of a friend, at her request. What I know of this book is, it is fact/fiction in the same genre as Ben Hur, and The Robe. Tells the story of Luke, and his travels with Paul, and it was highly rated by my friend.

Very very good. But one needs to remember to follow up by rereading both Saint Lukes Gospel and his Acts of the Apostles, as Caldwell's book provides other information on Luke and effectively turns the three sources into a more complete hagiography

This novel deserves to be placed perhaps not among the pearls of great catholic literature, but as a book worth reading and a very entertaining one. That 572 page brick invites to a very exciting journey in time, at the approaching dawn of the Roman Empire and the very beginnings of Christianity. S:T Luke, or as he is called here Lucanus, is a Greek gentile, born of freed slaves. He is a physician and wonderworker. We follow him on his path of life, in his search for the ultimate truth. Lucanus is in his early childhood initiated into some secrets meaning of which eventually is revealed to him later. Prior to that our hero goes through many sometimes very dramatic episodes. He tries to escape his destiny and to deny the truth lurching just in the corner. Overhelmed by the body of evidence which he experienced through his very adventurous life he finds finaly the ultimate centre of all his passions and longings. The book continues in S:T Lukes Gospel and Acts of the apostles.
The work is written with a glow charasteristic to Taylor Caldwell. The style seem often naive and overstuffed with details describing the surroundings. Maybe it was the author's intention to be historical, but sometimes it can be too much of that kind of credibility. Definietly recommendable book for both children and adult reading. The catholics will like it, and perhaps many physicians too.
