Format: Hardcover
‘Dealing with China’, written by former US Secretary of the Treasury and Goldman Sachs CEO Henry M. Paulson, provides an exceptionally interesting and somewhat controversial look behind the scenes of China's huge business success, written by a man who, because of his unquestionable experience and participation in the events described, certainly has a lot of interesting things to share with the readers.

After some time ago I read an extremely intriguing book ‘China's Second Continent’ written by Howard W. French, a subject of Chinese business success intrigued me to the point that I could hardly wait for this title to be released. On the other hand, the book received an extraordinary publicity after the publication of statement from Facebook father Mark Zuckerberg that Paulson’s book is becoming the freshest selection in Zuckerberg’s book club, which is why the book will certainly attract a large number of readers, even those that otherwise would not even notice a book on the shelves.

The reason why Paulson decided to write this book is his strong feeling that China is very important partner for the US, hoping that his work will additionally help change for the better US and China relations. The fields where Paulson sees a space for improving relations are numerous, but they all share the same characteristic - these are all the issues that go beyond the merely bilateral cooperation, affecting business and even the future of the entire human community, such as maintaining of world peace, economic growth or addressing the climate change issues.

Paulson begins his story 25 years ago, when he first visited China as a Goldman Sachs representative and was astonished seeing that the streets of the Chinese capital are full of horse-drawn carts.

China: The new international economic monolith. A nation whose future is written in the stars as a world leader, or so we've been led to believe. Henry Paulson delivers here both a clear and concise history of doing business in, and with, China and also provides a blueprint on how to improve business relations with the Asian giant in the future. Paulson himself is an expert in his field and I found 'Dealing With China' to be both hugely informative and very entertaining, especially as I have minimal knowledge and understanding of business practices in general. The author presents his work in clear and understandable language and I was greatly impressed both by the change that has taken place in China over the past twenty years but also the very positive and productive co-operation that has taken place between the United States and the Chinese. Mr. Paulson's book makes for a refreshing change.

Mr. Paulson has spent nearly twenty years doing business with the Chinese. Whilst working for Goldman Sachs since the late nineties, through to his time as Treasury Secretary in Bush Jnr's government and his work beyond, the author provides a fascinating account on how he and his colleagues worked with China's leaders to assist them in building up and re-organising their burgeoning economic might. The gargantuan state operated enterprises (SOE) that characterised China's economy were unproductive and noncompetitive, making losses so huge that the true amount could not be ascertained. Paulson and Goldman Sachs provided much advise and expertise on where to make the correct alterations in order to achieve success.

Encapsulating the essence of China in the late 90's was a real flash back for anyone that had been involved at the time or wishing to study the history today. The book veered off into self-aggrandisement half way through (leading to a loss of a star) which almost led me to abandon reading it but then came back on stream with very useful insights into how charities can work in China. I was able to learn from this and apply to my own charity activities which saved a lot of time and frustration.
