I read a lot of crime stories and thrillers, and it’s not often that I come across something unique. In this story we get heavily into how wrestling shows are done, and how the wrestlers live and work. So the story has a strong and interesting base with which to overlay the crime story. It works very well.
The story has two arcs. One is the detective work, which unfolds in chronological time. The other is a series of extracts from Valiant’s new and unpublished autobiography. The two story arcs are cleverly interleaved to hold our interest and keep up momentum. There are many red herrings, and a twist at the end, so I was kept guessing all the way through. This is also a bit of a romance - will Sigurdsson and Mason get together?
Overall, this is an interesting and unusual story, which I highly recommend.
Loved the wrestling theme and the flawed detective investigating the crime(s).
Read the book in a few days, which shows how much I enjoyed it.
Seemingly this is Jon Richter's first novel, and it's a great debut, so roll on his second novel.
