This is a well written book without deep medical jargon & readily understood. A fascinating insight to the monumental task of tracking and preventing diseases around the world.
What is particularly interesting is that many of these are known and yet scant lip service is being paid to the eradication/prevention of them especially by the Chinese and certain Far East countries.
The epidimologists are the detectives but the real heroes are those patients that provide the clues.
This is a MUST read for those who make the decisions as to how we fund pandemic & epidemic prevention.
A real pity some of the idiots ( especially BBC Breakfast) haven't read this before they open their mouths and spread disinformation or imply that not enough is being done to help our NHS with resources at this present time.

Osterholm is an internationally renowned epidemiologist who has been at the forefront of public health regarding infectious diseases and bioterrorism. He has led many investigations into infectious disease outbreaks around the world, and has been special advisor to the US Congress and Senate. This book, “Deadliest Enemy”, should be REQUIRED reading for all public health professionals, scientists, doctors and students and all key-workers. And it should be MANDATORY reading for government ministers!

For the rest of us, it is the most authoritative dissertation on public health policy, research and prevention of infectious diseases and bioterrorism, and an insight into the startling lack of understanding and action by our world leaders.

Osterholm’s unique experience shines through in this fascinating book. He succinctly describes how infectious disease outbreaks occur and how public health scientists, doctors and officials respond to them, the threats of potential outbreaks and the prevention of pandemics such as SARS, Ebola, Zika virus and Influenza – the king of infectious diseases.

This book predicted what would happen and laid out what we should have done to prepare. It is just a shame those in power didn't do anything about it, they were told. Having read this book I now know much more about the world of infectious diseases. This is definitely one everybody should read. That said, it is a bit of a doomsday book, no wonder he is known as bad news Mike, because he tells people the truth, not want they want to hear. Good on him for that.

Just what I was looking for; a book by an experienced epidemiologist summarising the potential pandemic threats facing humanity. It can be seen as prescient but we’ve also been hiding our collective heads in the sand over the threat of pandemic disease.

Let’s hope COVID-19 gives governments around the world the wake-up call needed; as bigger pandemic threats certainly loom.

The Precipice is next on my reading list!

I only hope the world and it's leaders will now understand the warnings, given that we are amid the 2020 Pandemic of Covid19. And understand too the need for maximum investment, in order to preserve humankind.

Chapter 19 of this book says much about how world leaders especially Trump have been responsible for the hundreds of thousands of deaths from Covid-19 through their inactivity and their insistence on spending money on arms rather than virus prevention. This book written in 2017 sounded an ominous warning that has been ignored. Those culpable should be brought to task by all.

The fact that I only learned if this book because of the current COVID-19 crisis is exactly what the author is trying to avoid. Sadly, some of his predictions were spot on, as we've seen today. And some are probably in the waiting. Technologies have reached great heights, yet we still put more emphasis on treatment rather than prevention. Monkey business takes a long time to change, I guess.
