If you love your sword fighting, then this is a great little flick. Yuen Biao is the main star in the movie, as well has Bridget Lin who plays his sister. Wu Ma also features in the movie as one of the villains, Biao kicks butt as usual. Doesn't get enough credit this movie, but if you enjoy the likes of Swordsman 2, Chinese Ghost Story ect, you will enjoy this.

HASH(0x9aa3afb4) out of 5 stars The stars shine in a creative movie 14 July 2000
By Phil Flores - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
I admire Brigitte Lin as an actress, not beacause she is great at martial arts, but because she can act. In particular, I really admire her work in Swordsman II and East is Red. She truly is one of the few actresses who can carry a movie.
Yuen Biao was great in this film also. He posseses skills that are rare in modern films. He plays a hero, who is inexperienced, yet skillful. A character who does not have to rely on comedy to be accepted by the audience.
Throw in an interesting plot with a musical instrument that can kill and you have an enjoyable movie. While this movie does not contain the amount of action sequences in typical HK fantasy films, the story is more than enough to compensate. Definitely a refreshing addition to the genre.
My only complaint is that Lin's character was far too similar to Asia the Invincible. Even though it may be what the director intended, it would have been nice to see her expand on that role, to allow her to distinguish differences in both characters. If she would have been given the chance, I feel that she would have been successful.
Great transfer on the DVD. If you're into extras, you will be disappointed. But I always buy DVD's for the quality of the movie, so it didn't affect my rating. It's also region 0 encoded and has Dolby Surround mixes in Cantonese and Mandarin. The subtitles are burned in, but are very readable throughout.
Definitely worth the 91 minutes to view . . . and now that Tai Seng is ditributing it domestically, you don't have to pay an arm-and-a-leg for it.

HASH(0x9a7db1a4) out of 5 stars Great kung-fu classic! 9 Sept. 2004
By leelee - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
I loved this as a classic kung-fu revenge click. Brigitte Lin is as beautiful as ever even when throwing her icy stare of death. She is a tremendous actress. I've never known many actresses that can act without speaking as Brigitte can with her facial expressions. Yuen Biao gives a strong performance.

The fight scenes are pretty good. When will they ever get the title right - it's "Deadly Melody."

HASH(0x9ae6bc18) out of 5 stars One of the best sleeper titles-guaranteed 6 May 2000
By BJ - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
After I saw swordsman 2 (which is my favorite movie) I wanted to see some more sword play Brigette Lin movies. So I went out and got a few of her movies. The first was the East is Red(swordsman 3)which had some good special effects but as a movie does not deserve the swordsman name, then I got The Bride With White Hair, now this was a very origional movie that had an extremely evil tone which I wasn't used to but the fight scenes didn't live up to the reviews that I read as they looked far too Blury and definitley speed altered, but this was still a good movie(4-stars)Then last I saw Deadful Melody which was outstanding,I cannot express how suprised I was after viewing this movie ,expecially after having the lowest expectations for it out of the bunch. But the true star in this was Yuen Biao which the story mainly focused on.The story was good and easy to follow, the cinematography and backgrounds were awesome, and the fight scenes were done perfectly and had spectacular wire work with no aparent speed altering(and the fights were also very plentiful)An excellent sleeper title that I couldn't reccomend more.Buy it I guarantee you'll be suprised. Also if you like Yuen Biao I would say this is his best movie. $17.95(DVD),how can you not take a chance?

HASH(0x9a6b8af8) out of 5 stars One qin to rule them all! 18 May 2010
By Celeste Chang - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
Well, if you've seen/read Lord of the Rings, you know how it goes. Everyone talks about the evil power of the Magic Lyre (a "qin" is actually more of a zither, but we'll go with the subtitles) and claims to want to destroy it, but actually everyone wants it for themselves, because whoever wields it can be the leader of the Martial World. So the Last Alliance of Men and Elves...sorry, I mean the Fire Palace, the Ghost Sect, etc., all led by a renegade member of the sect that has the Magic Lyre, form a small army to steal/destroy it. We're left with one young girl (Snow) holding the Magic Lyre after her parents have been slaughtered...and then she's driven off a cliff. As everyone knows, this just means the person comes back years later to take a hideous and gruesome revenge.

And no one does hideous gruesome vengeance like Brigitte Lin! As the grown-up Snow, she flies through this movie with THAT LOOK, alternately playing the main theme song or killing people with the Magic Notes of Explodey Doom. Her revenge plot involves having Yuen Biao deliver the Magic Lyre from one of her targets to another, in order to draw out those who want to steal it and to sow suspicion among them. One of the thieves is a very cute Carina Lau, as the chief disciple of the Fire Master (Wu Ma). She naturally ends up falling for Yuen Biao...

The plot is pretty standard, and the movie has the usual mix of violence, comedy, misunderstandings, women dressed as men, and cheesy effects. Yuen Biao doesn't do as much cool fighting stuff as you might hope for, but it's not bad. I thought the funniest character was Yuen Biao's master, Monk Arrives-Late, who always shows up a few minutes too late after every crisis. The various other characters are pretty good, too, with the Fire Master, the Ghost Master, and the Hard-Hearted Witch being the most memorable. Definitely worth watching if you enjoy this type of movie. Not the best, but entertaining and competently made.

HASH(0x9aa55750) out of 5 stars no the greatest of action, and kind of a weak story, but when brigitte shows up, sheeit happens 9 April 2006
By morgoth - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
And I am serious man. I don't want to give anything away, but this thing is insane. We don't get to see all the beautiful movements people are doing like bride with whit hair, but we get an extremely weird action movie that has people dying like by the tens. There is a part where I am prett sure the exploding heart thing from kill bil comes in to play. If someone knows where tarantino could have gotten this, tell me cause this is from like 93 and is the first reference I have seen of it. And it is WAY cooler than what happen in kill billy. So overall b lin is just too beautiful not too watch her and yuen biou gets to show off some of his acrobatics and gives a mre than solid acting performance. And the music is REALLY good. They don't play it enough but it is REALLY freaking awesome. When brigitte fights the special effects are really weak but the bodies being blown up are super cool. So don't expect fist of legend here type of action, but a lot more akin to butterfly sword, it;s just brigitte wasn't in that and with EVERYBODY underused, I would say this movie is far superior.

The dvd I got IS NOT a special edition, so maybe when you buy them from the new used section you just don't get what the picture is but that's fine but this movie is worth it. It has BOOMING 5.1 sound. It has a pretty good picture, not perfectly widescreened but good enough. The picture quality is well above average and that is a good thing sice it has IMBEDDED FREAKING SUBTITLES. Luckily, there is seriously only like 1-2 lines I couldn't read. So unlike a movie that I bought form rarescope awhile ago, the imbedded subs on this are very good. I would compare the imb subs to magic crane if you have seen that. No special features but seeing the beauty of b lin and having to turn my speakers way down not to blow them, that was sweet.
