I've been reading a lot of zombie apocalypse fiction over the last month or so - this is definitely one of the best to-date.

The story is set 17ish years after a terrible plague zombified much of the USA. The church has taken charge of the governance of the survivors and rules with an iron fist. Science is reviled, free thinking isn't tolerated, and a kind of National Service has been enforced so that everyone takes a turn at the border between safe territory and the zombie infested wilderness.

The characterisations are pretty strong, and the plot gets under way quite quickly. There's a really tense build up to the moment of first zombie contact and I really got immersed into the struggle for survival.

An excellent piece of writing all round. Definitely recommended if you like the genre.

One of my favourite zombie novels of all time. Matt Darst's writing flows, his character jump right out of the page and the story is not only original but in my opinion destined for screen. Roll on the next gem from this guy.

I really enjoyed ready this book. I was quite fascinated by the theories put forward for the cause of the zombie virus :-) And got a good giggle out of the Dune vs Star Wars.
I was a little disappointed in the end and felt that there were too many open doors to the group's adventure and also thought that the killing of one of the heroes at the end was a bit of a cop out.
Otherwise, not a bad investment for a read. I hope that the author has the good mind to write further with these characters.

Don't let the metion of church put you of this book, it is an awesome read. Yes the church comes into it but not the religious side of it, you need to read this book, it does have a few pages that make you wonder where it is going and then it picks up and like a roller coaster ride you cant get off it, I read it in 2 nights I jsut could not put it down. Will definately be looking for mnore this author

Most examples of zombielit are military in nature - the fight against the rising tide of zombies (think World War Z, the Morningstar books etc). Dead things starts 18 years after the rise of the dead and the fall of civilisation, and is based in a thoroughly nasty theocratic city state. A group of teens/twentysomethings get stranded outside the city walls and need to walk back, and their wanderings are the subject of the book.

Unfortunately, the plot also wanders, with a large side-order of speculation about how the zombie plague arose, and I really don't think this adds to the book at all. What gets it four stars from me is the quality of the writing, and particularly the characterisation, which is excellent and bodes well for this young writer.

I really enjoyed reading Dead Things. Read it all in two sittings. Liked very much the premise and ultimate conclusion of the book. Great ending in my opinion but I won't say more than that.

I've read a large number of zombies books and this ranks highly in my opinion.

Enjoy.
