Except it's not looking much like a plus. Luke is suspicious and doubts her skill, his daughter hates her Dad for not letting her go back to her junkie mom, and mystery surrounds the house and its resident, intractable ghost. All of which would be bad enough without an instant attraction between Cassie and her employer.
And to cap it all off, it looks like someone's trying to kill her... She can talk to the dead. Doesn't mean she wants to become one.
DEAD PEOPLE is a smart, snappy, funny read with good dose of heat and a twisting mystery. Cassie's dark outlook and occasional (justified) bitterness can't hide the greatness of her heart. Luke's dark sexiness and the heat of their relationship is nicely balanced by Cassie's growing connection with his daughter and Luke's determination to be a good father. The ending is deeply satisfying, the more so for not sweeping any of their issues under the carpet, and giving a sense of a happy beginning, rather than a happy ending.
One of the things I loved about this story is that each ghost was every bit as real as the eclectic cast of living characters, with good guys and bad, sad, lost souls and grasping selfish ones. The scene in the cemetery was wonderful, and wise beyond expectation.
In the midst of all the fun, mystery and romance, there are some gems and words of wisdom, too, all the more powerful for blind-siding the reader.
Read Dead People. You won't regret it.
Sexy singer/songwriter Luke is trying to make a home for his newly discovered daughter. Unfortunately the former owner of the house, although dead, is not too keen to leave the building. Enter Cassie, professional ghost-whisperer. She may have a difficult private life and a very unusual side-kick, but she doesn't make a habit of fancying the pants off her clients ... But there is something about Luke, and his waif-like 10 year old daughter, that tugs at her heart, and in Luke's case, sends her blood pressure rising.
Dead People is an easy read, with quick fire banter, deft characterisation, some laugh out loud moments and a scattering of steamy love scenes. The cast all have real-world problems, including the ghosts, but find the will and the ability to solve them, with a little help from people who care for them.
Published by the author at a absolute bargain price, it is well worth a look if you want a fast and fun paranormal, for a sunny afternoon on the beach or a cold afternoon on the sofa. Pure escapism.
