The title made this book sound really interesting, promising murderers telling their story in their own words.

This was far from the truth, as the author delivered his biased interpretations of their words. Their words were in short supply. Indeed an entire chapter was based on a murderer who refused to cooperate with the author, which gave the author free reign to write whatever he wanted - spending an inordinate amount of time covering the murderer's life story.

Altogether, failed to deliver the goods. Boring and disappointing.

On the plus side this is far better than the standard "mini-profiles" that similar books covering a number of killers push, closer to the level of analysis you get in the biographies.
The selling point is that that author has corresponded with and interviewed the killers personally, although in some cases the interviews seem quite perfunctory and the interviewees unco-operative. I got the impression that there was quite a bit of filler to spin it out to book size (even more so for volume 2). At some points the author seems to give himself star billing over the interviewees. It would have been nice to have seen the interview transcripts appended.

I would recommend this book to any true crime fan. Each chapter is a page turner and offers an insight into the minds of the individual killers through their own words via correspondence with the author.

I love true crime books. I have some that I thought were a waste of time and money, but I found this book very interesting and a good read. I'm no criminology student, just a true crime fan, and found this book easy to follow and hard to put down.

Still reading... so far so good but it does feel fairly biased in parts which is distracting. Another unusual faux par is the number of typos in the book. Not impressed but it's reasonably engaging nonetheless.

This book will appeal to fans of true crime books as it contains several pieces of writing from the killers themselves. Well written and interesting especially the end section about people who correspond with these serial killers.
