If you're not familiar with Cozy Mysteries, the wonderful multi-author sub-genre of laugh out loud funny stand alone 'who-dun-its' for the mystery buff with an open mind and a sense of humour, then you're in for a real treat as a new paranormal series enters the fray. The Happily Everlasting series written by four seriously good authors kicks off with 'Dead Man Talking' by Jana DeLeon.
Six years ago, armed with her degree and lots of ambition, Zoe Parker left Everlasting for the bright lights of Los Angeles and never looked back....until now. Exhausted and desperately in need of a shower and some food, she arrives at the hospital in Everlasting, Maine, where her Great-Aunt Esmerelda, universally known by her mystical name of Sapphire, is in the ICU following a fall down the stairs at her lighthouse home. But things are not as simple as that. Zoe knows her Aunt Sapphire better than anyone, is pretty sure there's more going on than the obvious and decides to call the Sheriff.
Unfortunately, Sheriff Bull is having some kind of mid-life crisis and has surrounded herself with a calendar's worth of muscle bound, model type guys who seem to have checked their brains at the door to the gym, so Zoe decides to investigate herself to make sure Sapphire's going to be safe when she comes home. With help from old flame Dane Stanton, a half-dressed ghost, elderly fishermen Monte and Sam, ten cats and the weather, she embarks on a journey into the history and legends of Everlasting. One in particular which may or may not be true, about the Magic Stone, rumoured to be a walnut sized emerald buried by one of the founders somewhere in Everlasting... or not...
I'm not going to give spoilers, but this is a seriously funny book and Zoe has developed sarcasm into a fine art that, along with a host of other things, had me laughing out loud. Zoe and Dane are, separately, surprised they still have feelings for each other and each decides not to do anything about them, just act like friends, but fate was never going to let that happen and there is a happily ever after. I absolutely loved this book and all the wonderful characters, even the nasty ones. The bad guys seem to checked their brains somewhere too, or they'd have worked out that if the legend was true, someone would have gone after the emerald years ago. The army of cats is amazing and if she were real, Sapphire could make a mint training other people's - but you'll have to read the book to find out about that - and it's definitely worth it. I was in stitches, especially when Zoe sat on one in the bathroom her first night back.... nope, you can even torture me with chocolate, I'm not going to say anymore.
Jana DeLeon isn't a new author to me, I've got six or eight of her books and this is definitely on the lighter side of her writing, more 'Unlucky' and 'Trouble in Mudbug' than 'Malevolent', and well worth the 5 stars I've given it. I highly recommend it to everyone who likes a good mystery filled with humour, paranormal abilities and romance.
Was given this as an ARC to give an honest review.
This is the first time I have read this author and it's also my first reading a paranormal mystery. And I've absolutely loved it. The author gets a hold of you from the first page, and keeps you rooted in that one spot on your sofa wanting, no needing to find out what happens next.
I'm not going to go into the storyline cause I ALWAYS end up giving out spoilers.lol. But i love it how this author has penned in 2 strong female characters when normally you get the one, and they are both funny in their own ways And I absolutely loved Cornelius, what a character, lol.
This is a good clean fun mystery with a clean romance which means it's entirely up to you and your imagination.
I definitely will read this author again, and it well and truly deserves it's five stars.
I did like that the characters were well fleshed out and the romance didn't feel forced or happen for the sake of the genre, it was a steady and natural progression.
I'm still not sure what exactly to class Zoe as, a witch perhaps?, as select family members in her line are gifted. Zoe's grandmother has an affinity for reading the emotions of cats for example. Dane seems the typical mundane human with no mention of supernatural goings on in his life.
A nice read, with plenty of comedy and light heartedness to go along with the drama and investigations in the story.
