Japanese sci-fi anime. Retro and Pandy, two of Earth's last survivors, wake up outside a city, naked and suffering from amnesia. They manage to get themselves some clothes, some food and a car. But then they are arrested and sent to jail after a shoot-out with the police, and for their punishment they are sent to Dead Leaves, a penal colony on the Moon that is notorious for mistreating its prisoners. Retro and Pandy plan their escape, trying all the while to bring back their precious memories.
Dead Leaves is the latest installment in the collaboration between Manga Entertainment and Production I.G. that brought viewers Blood: The Last Vampire (2001) and Kai Doh Maru (2003). But Dead Leaves, which suggests a mixture of Ninja Scroll and Inspector Zim designed by Peter Chung, lacks the sensual elegance of the earlier OVAs. Retro, who has a television set for a head, and Pandy awaken with their memories erased. Sent to the lunar prison of Dead Leaves, they contrive an escape with hordes of other inmates. A long, pointless slaughter ensues, with blood, bullets, and body parts flying across the screen. The frame is so cluttered with angular characters, bright colors, Japanese and English words, mechanical devices, and gore, it's difficult to follow the frenetic action, let alone the fragmentary story. (Unrated, suitable for ages 17 and older: brief nudity, extensive violence, profanity, sexual humor, toilet humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Not knowing much about the basis of the story, I decided the whole look of the film was enough to warrant a purchase.
This film is absolutely crazy, that is quite clear after watching just 10 seconds. The animation (again) is absolutely astounding and is unlike anything I've ever seen before. With the constant explosions and gun-fire comes the use of comic book-style descriptive words being thrown at the screen. It makes for a visual style that is truly unforgettable.
The film itself is just 60 minutes, but this is plenty long enough with a film filled with so much action.
One thing that did strike me with Dead Leaves, however, is how perverted it is. One character, for instance, has a large cone-shaped drill as a penis. This is quite a dirty film, make no mistake. But it's not overly so, as various scenes will bring a laugh.
Overall this is massively recommended. A fantastic achievement in animation.
Pandy and Retro, the main characters of the animation, wake up from their hibernation capsules naked and with their memories wiped. They soon start on a violent rampage through the city while speculating wildly about who they are. When the police finally capture them they are sent to the maximum security orbital prison "Dead Leaves". But is maximum security enough to stop these two? And why do they get the feeling they've been there before?
The disc features english and japanese soundtracks with optional english subtitles. The extras include the usual staff interviews and an amusing video of the staff doing a Dead Leaves drinking game.
Dead Leaves is all about fast, wild and crude over-the-top cartoon violence. It has a very unique art and animation style that suits the story very well. Just don't go looking for any depth to the story, because it simply isn't there. Definitely worth watching though.
