Three months previous to "Dead In Red", New York City based unemployed insurance investigator Jeff Resnick is on his way home from hanging with his buddies when he is viciously mugged and beaten, where he suffers a concussion, and both a broken head and a broken arm. His estranged half-brother, the wealthy Doctor Richard Alpert and his live in significant African-American other, Brenda, take him back to their home in Buffalo to recuperate. While there Jeff's innate, but unpredictable, psi abilities start to emerge. With this second novel both are recuperating, Jeff from his mugging, and Richard from being shot in the first book.

Feeling useless and needing to do something, Jeff has found himself hanging out the local sports bar "The Whole Nine Yards". Then one day one of the bartenders, Walt Kaplan is murdered, and Jeff is offered two jobs by the bar's owner, and Walt's cousin, Tom. The first job is to look into, and investigate Walt's death, and the other is to fill the bartending job that has now been left empty.

Meanwhile, Jeff is having flashbacks and dreams of his mugging and that of a red stiletto-healed shoe.

Deciding to take both jobs, the first reluctantly, the second not so much, he and his brother, who has become his Watson, begin to look into Walt's death. After arriving at the crime scene Jeff realizes that Walt wasn't murdered where his body was found, but was dumped at the Old Red Mill and that the mill houses a coffee shop by Cyn(thia) Lennox, nee Taggert, who is an old schoolmate of Richard's and who is actively hostile to Jeff.

While he is investigating Walt's death, Jeff's personal life is still in shambles.

For all Jeff Resnick lovers and those yet to discover this unique sleuth, L.L. Bartlett's second suspense mystery, DEAD IN RED brings back a loved set of characters to a new mystery territory, closer to home yet one that takes them to the darker sides of society and the dark secrets of individuals nearby. The psychic sleuth gives a nice twist to the unfolding mystery, but this Jeff Resnick mystery also has an extra dimension as L.L. Bartlett peers deeper into the relationship and tensions between Jeff and his brother.

In her debut mystery, MURDER ON THE MIND, L.L. Bartlett introduced Jeff Resnick. Divorced and having just lost his job as an insurance investigator, Jeff is mugged. The attack leaves him brain damaged and psychic. His brother Richard, a doctor, and Richard's girlfriend Brenda care for him. Frustrated at his sudden incapacity and reliance on Richard, Jeff investigates the brutal death of a banker.

In DEAD IN RED, Jeff Resnick turns his eyes from a high society positioned victim to a murder closer to home. Tom Links, the owner of his favorite bar and hang out, The Whole Nine Yards, asks Jeff to look into the murder of bartender Walt Kaplan. Jeff sees a vision of a high heeled red sequined shoe, a shoe that leads him to investigate a friend from his brother's past, theater groups, foot fetishes and even the haunts of the Buffalo's drag queens, but not even a psychic vision can prepare him for the scenes that will unfold before him. As the clues and a new vision lead him closer to answers, Jeff must race to save an unknown person. Although fear and guilt haunt him, Jeff knows he can only save this person by solving the crime.

Humorous, fast-paced and full of surprises and emotion. Jeff Resnick is a great flawed sleuth.

Love the characters described in the Jeff Resnick series.L.L.Bartlett writes with great affection for the siblings, and is brilliant at writing crime novels with a psychic undertone, which although is totally enthralling,is never too deep to make the plot complicated.I have now read all six books in the series, and eagerly await a 7th??

After receiving head injuries during a mugging, Jeff has developed a psychic ability to zone in on some people's emotions. This is the second one of the series, and I am enjoying them immensely. I have also read the 1st & 3rd in the series, where the 'whodunnit' is pretty complicated and gets quite thrilling towards the end. I'm looking forward to the 4th one.

It was okay. I enjoyed the first one more than this and then the price jumped up after the first book (kindle editions) so I'm not sure I will read them all. Although I do like the characters and watching their relationships grow, I feel the plot was a little thin if I'm honest. A lot of repeated chapters covering the same ground as though the author 'thinks me a bit thick an that'. I want more mystery and plots that cover many possibilities. I'm not complaining too much though, it did 'kill' a bit of time

After reading LL Bartlett's first book 'Murder on the Mind' I promptly bought this one. The plots are quite simple and easy to follow but still keep me turning the pages. I enjoy this series of books and will buy more.
