Praise for gripping, atmospheric crime thriller THE DEAD HOUSE: Chilling, atmospheric and so gripping it hurts. The Dead House is a masterpiece. You won't read a better crime novel this year (MARK EDWARDS)

Intriguing and compelling - I love Fiona Griffiths (SHARON BOLTON)

In a word - brilliant. One of the most enjoyable crime novels I've read in a while (JAMES OSWALD)

Compelling and claustrophobic. Without a doubt, Fiona Griffiths is one of crime's most memorable heroines (SARAH HILARY)

One of the most interesting and complicated protagonists in current UK crime fiction. Truly unforgettable (MICK HERRON)

Fiona Griffiths is a wonderful character, an absolute breath of fresh air. The Dead House had me intrigued from the start and I can't wait for more from my new favourite heroine (JENNY BLACKHURST)

Fiona Griffiths is one of the most unusual and engaging characters in British crime fiction. Those who haven't yet encountered Fiona will be drawn into a beautifully crafted world (SINEAD CROWLEY)

Gripping ... Fiona Griffiths kept me hooked to the last page and left me hungry for more (RACHEL ABBOTT)

Griffiths gets more interesting with each book (TIMES)

Compelling...a new crime talent to treasure (DAILY MAIL)

Unsure what to make of this. The plot is absolutely preposterous, even more so than the earlier books in the series. I mean, literally unbelievable.

But then, there's so much to like too. Fiona Griffiths, the principal character, is beautifully crafted: yes, another maverick cop in some ways, but done v cleverly: recovering slowly from a mental illness, impulsive, kind, rash, intuitive. I really love this character. And the dialogue is excellent: not quite in the Bill James/Harpur and Iles league, but not bad at all.

Some strands run through the whole series: mainly Fiona's identity, and these are cleverly drawn out in such a way as not to become distracting from the main story.

I've read all 5 in the series and I believe a new one is just out and I am looking forward to that. Love the character, like the series ... just a bit more plot credibility would make this perfect for me.

Brilliant, as ever. What a series this is. Still no spilling the beans about Fiona's birth. Still no proper details about her dad's real criminal involvement. And there she is, stuck in yet another out of the way place somewhere in the Welsh hills fighting for her life. And where else would the hills be? I'm Welsh and very very touchy about how we and the country are treated by writers but Bingham? 100% spot on. The empathy, sympathy, even 99% of the spelling [check Esyllt] are excellent and come from someone who's been there and knows the country and its people. Superb characters, superb writing. Da iawn!!!!

Excellent, the best yet, I had the creeps over some parts. I have really enjoyed all five books now but, lost a star as, must say I am disappointed that the promise that we would find out where/how Fiona came to be, the cause of her mental 'breakdown' has not happened yet. Bit of a con as it would seem the book with this in it has not yet been published! Just how many more before 'all is revealed'?

This beautifully written book was my introduction to DS Fiona Griffiths and what an introduction it was. It gripped me from start to finish and is This is easily the best book I’ve read this year.

The setting is rural and rugged south Wales, there’s a dead body found in mysterious circumstances plus a kidnapping. The author’s knowledge of caving shines through with Fiona’s underground adventure, where life and limb are at risk. Add to the mix a Christian retreat in the middle of nowhere where the Brothers go about their holy business and you have a riveting tale.

More delights await me, I’m sure, with the rest of Harry Bingham’s books.

Another great crime thriller from HB featuring the wonderful Sergeant Fiona Griffiths who delights in nothing more that to go off and do things her way while "the grown-ups" plod boringly on, following the rules - even when more than once it almost results in this being the last Fiona Griffiths book. Phew! She makes it to the end (or is that a new beginning?) Can't wait for the next one.

I like that the main character is herself flawed. Her escapades are sometimes improbable but that somehow adds to her charm. The author clearly knows his subject and uses it to good effect, such as the caving element in this latest book. I find myself looking forward to Fiona's next adventure and would like to see her make more use of the skills taught to her by Lev.

Although not quite as straight-in on the action as the other books in the Fiona Griffith series' this one gets there as one would expect from Harry Bingham. I love these stories and the dark humour both real and totally identifiable to me.

I have been harbouring some deep suspicions about where it will all end but I'm sure to get there, as and when Fiona - (and Harry) permits. Keep up the good work Mr B.
