From the Back Cover
Dead Beat introduces Kate Brannigan, a female private detective who does for Manchester what V.I. Warshawski has done for Chicago.

You can see how Val McDermid's style of writing has changed and become well honed since the early days and this series is a great example of this. A Private Investigator rather than a Police Detective, also written in the first rather than the third person, but Kate Brannigan is a plausible character. A murder takes place in a rock stars mansion and Brannigan is employed to find the killer before the Police - it has a very Cluedo edge to it!
An enjoyable book, not as good as McDermid's Police Detectives but still a great book, enjoy it for what it is .
