Comparing this to my previous kettle (a Philips HD4687/92, also expensive but about £20 less than this), the Delonghi boils in around the same time but lacks the insulation of the Philips (so water does not stay hot for as long), and does not have any of the Philips' other special features. However, it does have a mechanical switch, as opposed to the Philips touch-sensitive controls which malfunctioned after just over a year, so I'm hoping this one will last longer.
One other thing I find irritating about this kettle is that, because of the bulbous shape & the fact that most of the water is right at the bottom, the water level indicator starts at 1 litre. Because I usually only boil enough water for one or two cups at a time, this makes it pretty useless - I have to pick up the kettle and try to judge by weight how full it is - which because of the bulbous shape and heavy bottom isn't too easy.
Overall, this is a swish-looking fuss-free kettle which is great to use, but if you're willing to sacrifice the looks, you can find something just as good for a lot less money.
Once in place it looks and feels well made and, most importantly, designed with practicality foremost. It feels right in the hand and pours exceptionally well. It has a very nicely finished bright metal inside with a concealed element and the outside is also well finished with materials chosen to keep clean easily and stay looking good. Switchgear and ergonomics are all fine with only a tiny caveat: the visible water level is a little slow to register so if you use this you may well put in more water than you need. I suspect most people will know long much to fill it without using this once the kettle has been in use a day or so.
I like it very much.
The black metal casing feeds solid and sturdy, with satisfying chunky clunks when replacing it on the base and switching on. The 3kW element boils very quickly, and the metal spout is a very precice pourer, better than most kettles and much better than plastic ones.
The biggest downside to this kettle is the very tight fitting lid. It takes a good tug to get it off to fill up, so people with dexterity problems may struggle to do it. Since it flies off all of a sudden it also has a tendency to spray water all over from the condensation that collects underneath after boiling. Once you get used to this however it's easier to manage. It's also quite noisy when boiling, noisier than some, but not a problem.
Despite these minor niggles, this is a very well made and stylish kettle. It boils fast (as fast as any other fast boil), looks nice and is generally a pleasure to use, so the buyer has to decide if the looks are enough to make the premium worthwhile. It is after all very nice and one of life's simple pleasures to use luxurious products every day.

A great looking kettle. A little lighter than I thought it would be with the base being a bit flimsy. No issues though so I am more than happy.Published on 24 May 2014 by Mr I Davie
