This is a lovely kettle - although its slightly eccentric bulbous brown-and-black looks are obviously something you will either love or hate - and it does its job of making cold water hot. The price (£72 at time of writing) is a lot to ask for something that does that, even if it does do it very quickly (I timed it, and the full 1.7 litres takes just over 3 minutes). The element is fully enclosed in the base of the kettle, which means that there's no minimum water level and it's great for just boiling up a single cup's worth.

Comparing this to my previous kettle (a Philips HD4687/92, also expensive but about £20 less than this), the Delonghi boils in around the same time but lacks the insulation of the Philips (so water does not stay hot for as long), and does not have any of the Philips' other special features. However, it does have a mechanical switch, as opposed to the Philips touch-sensitive controls which malfunctioned after just over a year, so I'm hoping this one will last longer.

One other thing I find irritating about this kettle is that, because of the bulbous shape & the fact that most of the water is right at the bottom, the water level indicator starts at 1 litre. Because I usually only boil enough water for one or two cups at a time, this makes it pretty useless - I have to pick up the kettle and try to judge by weight how full it is - which because of the bulbous shape and heavy bottom isn't too easy.

Overall, this is a swish-looking fuss-free kettle which is great to use, but if you're willing to sacrifice the looks, you can find something just as good for a lot less money.

This was a bit of a disappointment straight out of the box. The base is flimsy brown plastic that looks rather cheap and the power cable cannot be clipped securely to it. The kettle itself feels lightweight - but this makes it effortless to use.

Once in place it looks and feels well made and, most importantly, designed with practicality foremost. It feels right in the hand and pours exceptionally well. It has a very nicely finished bright metal inside with a concealed element and the outside is also well finished with materials chosen to keep clean easily and stay looking good. Switchgear and ergonomics are all fine with only a tiny caveat: the visible water level is a little slow to register so if you use this you may well put in more water than you need. I suspect most people will know long much to fill it without using this once the kettle has been in use a day or so.

I like it very much.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This supremely stylish kettle from Delonghi certainly looks good, but it also has a good build quality making it an all round winner. With supposedly "vintage" stylings it has a classy colour combination of matt black metal with brown plastic trim, not very exciting sounding but very good looking in reality.

The black metal casing feeds solid and sturdy, with satisfying chunky clunks when replacing it on the base and switching on. The 3kW element boils very quickly, and the metal spout is a very precice pourer, better than most kettles and much better than plastic ones.

The biggest downside to this kettle is the very tight fitting lid. It takes a good tug to get it off to fill up, so people with dexterity problems may struggle to do it. Since it flies off all of a sudden it also has a tendency to spray water all over from the condensation that collects underneath after boiling. Once you get used to this however it's easier to manage. It's also quite noisy when boiling, noisier than some, but not a problem.

Despite these minor niggles, this is a very well made and stylish kettle. It boils fast (as fast as any other fast boil), looks nice and is generally a pleasure to use, so the buyer has to decide if the looks are enough to make the premium worthwhile. It is after all very nice and one of life's simple pleasures to use luxurious products every day.

It works okay, it's quite noisy when heating the water and not a quick as our old kettle which we had for over 10 years. I don't think this will last half as long. The capacity is a bit limited, and can only cope with 4 mugs at a time. The Power has an issue that it has condencation if you fill and use time after time due to it's capacity.

We read hundreds of kettle reviews to the point of kettle induced insanity. If you want a kettle that looks like this then you won't be disappointed. It boils quickly, pours without dripping and is easy to clean. For us that fits the bill of a quality kettle. Don't waste your time looking at thousands of kettles if you like the look of this one just buy it and enjoy a brew.

Before ordering this kettle I read several reviews left by customers who had already purchased the item. After reading some of the rather negative comments I gave serious thought to proceeding with an order. However I decided to throw caution to the wind and place my order, especially as I had been searching for almost a week for a kettle that was both stylish and practical. I'm glad that I went with my instincts as the kettle is wonderful ! I love it, it looks great in my kitchen and works like a dream. Unlike some of the previous reviews I don't find it noisy or at least any noisier than any other kettle that I've had. It boils quickly and the water temperature upon boiling is perfect. The only thing that I would quibble about is possibly the price £72.00 for a kettle is an awful lot more than I wanted to pay or would normally pay for a small kitchen appliance, other than that I'm completely thrilled with my purchase and have now ordered the matching toaster ;)
