De'Longhi PrimaDonna bean-to-cup espresso and cappuccino machine
The PrimaDonna ESAM6620 is a coffee machine designed to give any user the ability to make restaurant and coffee bar standard coffee in the comfort of their own home. It grinds fresh beans internally and has an integrated carafe for frothing fresh milk, delivering all your favourite coffee drinks – espresso, lungo, latte, and cappuccino – at the touch of a button. The PrimaDonna is sleekly styled with a premium stainless steel finish to look attractive in any home.
All aspects of a typical professional pump espresso machine (like the ones you see in your high street coffee bar), such as grinders, filter holders, and steam pipes, are found working inside the PrimaDonna ESAM6620: De'Longhi has simply redesigned, compacted, and hidden them inside the machine. Magnifica expertly performs all of these functions at the touch of one button. The traditional milk frother allows you to impress your guests by manually frothing the milk whilst making them the ideal cappuccino or latte.
Removable milk carafe
The innovative patented milk carafe plugs straight into the machine, and when you have selected the froth density to tailor your coffee simply press the button on the control panel for latte and cappuccino and the machine does the rest for you.
The system has been designed to ensure the milk never goes inside the main body of the machine to guarantee utmost hygiene at all times. The milk carafe has an auto-clean button, which when pressed cleans the pipes inside the milk carafe so that it can then be unplugged and conveniently stored in the fridge until the next time you'd like a milky coffee. When it's time to change the milk in the carafe, it can be dismantled and all parts can be conveniently popped in the dishwasher.
Integrated burr grinder
The integrated professional burr grinder has seven adjustable coarseness settings. The taste and quality of your coffee depends heavily on how finely the beans have been ground – choose the finer setting for a stronger taste, or a more coarse setting for a weaker-tasting coffee.
The coffee beans are freshly ground for each serving, and the coffee strength is fully programmable so you can change the amount of coffee it grinds and dispenses from 7 to 11 grams.
Removable brewing unit
The brewing unit provides optimum heat distribution; it does all of the priming, pre-brewing, warming up, coffee dosing, coffee tamping, and extraction for you.
It is automatically rinsed every time you turn the machine on or off, and the innovative design means the brewing unit is removable for easy cleaning and maintenance.
Thermoblock is the type of boiler found in De'Longhi bean-to-cup coffee machines. It only heats enough water for your coffee serving, achieving a stable and accurately controlled water temperature that is crucial for brewing the ideal coffee.
This reduces warm-up time, so that your coffee machine is ready for use in seconds, and is also made to be energy efficient when compared to traditional boilers. The coffee temperature can be tailored further in the menu settings.
Ergonomic and easy to use
Both the water and coffee ground containers are at the front of the machine, so they can be easily removed for cleaning. The water tank is easy to refill – simply take it to the tap and fill – and will hold up to 1.8 litres of water.
The intuitive digital display enables you to effortlessly navigate the controls, and tells the user exactly what is happening at all times. It will inform you when the coffee grounds container needs emptying, and when the water tank needs filling, and will take you through all the steps of making your favourite coffee. It even tells you when it's time to descale the machine.
One or two cups
Select one or two cups of coffee at the same time just by pressing the relevant button. The number of coffees selected is indicated with a single or double cup on the front panel. This function is available for the black coffee options on the machine, and automatically adjusts the amount of coffee ground in a single brewing cycle.
The ESAM6620 can memorise your favourite coffee. This can be actioned by programming the amount of milk, water, and coffee you would like to be used, and storing it in the memory. Simply select 'My coffee' on the rotary control to access this function.
Automatic shut off
The PrimaDonna ESAM6620 will automatically switch itself off after a pre-set amount of time has elapsed.
Adjustable coffee dispenser
The coffee dispenser can be moved up or down to accommodate both full-size latte glasses and espresso cups.
The bean-to-cup journey
The function of a bean-to-cup machine is just as the name suggests: delivering coffee straight from freshly ground beans into your cup in seconds. After pressing one button to select espresso, the bean-to-cup journey starts at the integral coffee bean grinder: an adjustable, professional conical burr grinder will expertly grind the beans to your desired coarseness.
The ground coffee is then packed tightly by the internal brewing unit. Hot water is forced through the coffee up to a professional 15-bar pressure. The espresso is then delivered straight into the cup. The hallmark of a well made espresso is recognised by the 'crema', a creamy, hazelnut-coloured layer that sits on top of the espresso to seal in temperature and flavour. The thicker the crema, the better the espresso, and the quality of the machine that produced it.
If you have run out of coffee beans or want/prefer to use pre-ground coffee instead (decaffeinated for example), use the control panel to change the settings and put ground coffee in the ground coffee compartment.
De'Longhi quality and coffee
Quality and reliability remain integral to De'Longhi's brand values. All products are subjected to rigorous quality checks. The top of the range machines are still designed, produced, and assembled by hand in the Italian production sites, in order to uphold the expected high standards.

1) Selecting 'Double, long Coffee' does not necessarily give a 'double-strength' coffee.
Coffee strength is dictated by a number of factors but the 'Coffee buttons' of which 'Double, Long Coffee' is one, only affect the strength in terms of how much water they're custom programmed (by the user) to deliver.
To explain that a bit better... the 'coffee buttons' ranging from Single to Double, Espresso or Long are programmable in that you can change how much water they deliver to suit taste &/ or the cups you use.
On this point there is an issue which, good as the machines are, is not addressed by DeLonghi and one which almost certainly accounts for some opinions that the coffee delivered falls a little short of a Barista's... I shall explain...
When the user presses the 'Double Long' button the machine grinds the coffee, compresses it and passes water through the patte at 15bar and around 93 degrees centigrade. The amount of water passing through here is dictated by the user's custom preference -not DeLonghi... therein lies the problem and one must understand coffee to know why that's a problem...
This is an espresso machine and all drinks it delivers are based on espresso either straight-up or diluted with water (Americano) or milk (Latte etc).Read more ›
This machine is a cosmetically updated PrimaDonna ESAM6600, which is very similar.
The only issues I have had are:
1. The "tab" on the back of the drip tray is very flimsy and easily broken when washing. it operates a microswitch that tells the machine that the tray is missing, so you would think that if the tab is missing, the machine wouldnt work. Fortunately it is sensible to work out that if everything else (including the grounds container) is there (another tab and microswitch), then the drip tray must also be there, and the machine ignores the problem!
2. The milk frother jug has a problem with the "venturi" effect that draws the milk up the straw in the jug. These wear out within a year, and require a new jug lid (£16). Ive had 3 ! Update 2/1/16 - I've traced the milk jug failures to the O rings on the milk carafe coupler, after reading some other reviews. The good news is that they are available for about £4 a set delivered via a certain well known auction site. They are 2 minutes to change and the milk frother is back working again as good as ever.
3. Most worrying of all is the display panel, which notoriously fails after about 12 - 18 months, its down to it being placed above the boiler, and the solder melts on the board and it fails either completely, or just the display / backlight fails. Ive had 2 in 3 years replaced under warranty. When its out of warranty the boards are £82 + fitting, so be warned its VERY common!
Other than those 3 issues, the machine is reliable and makes FANTASTIC coffee.
What do you get? The box arrives and contains little more than you'd expect as basics - with hardly any "extras" with the possible exception of the "Plastic ground coffee spoon" and the "Descaler". Indeed I was a bit disappointed to find that when I opened the box entitled "starter kit" all I got was the descaler and an instruction book - and a lot of empty space!
How easy is it to use? It purports to be simple to use, effortlessly converting "bean to cup" coffee - and it certainly does this in style. Buy yourself some roasted beans and drop them in the top left compartment, fill the appropriate container up with water (this slots in and out of the right side of the machine), put some milk in the milk jug and attach this to the machine and press the button for the type of coffee you want. Just press cappuccino and as long as your mug is in the right position just a few seconds later - hey presto - a lovely cup of cappuccino is sitting waiting to be drunk!
If you prefer the slightly cheaper route with using ground coffee, then just spoon this into the middle compartment (using the measuring spoon provided) and ditto - a hot cup of cappuccino is ready to drink.
The machine has separate buttons for Cappuccinos, latte-macchiatos and caffe-lattes. Coffee dispenser accommodates: full size or espresso cups
The "Burr grinder" for grinding the coffee is adjustable in 7 different coarseness settings.Read more ›
