A well researched survey of a long career in Irish politics, a career which in large measure set the terms of British relations with Ireland for most of the 20th century. To that extent, de Valera must bear a large share of responsibility for the Troubles and the precarious state of politics in Northern Ireland today. Tim Pat Coogan says at the outset of the book that he hopes critics will give him credit for being fair. I think he is, but I found it hard to avoid the impression that the author believes that de Valera's enormous influence on events was not always used for the best.

This is the definitive biography of a great Irish statesman. I bought it along with the Michael Collins biography, if you want to understand the politics and personalities that formed the Irish state you cant go wrong.Keep an open mind, Great stuff.
