Small World - Tales and Legends introduces 54 new Event cards that change the story line of each turn during the game.
Event cards are organized into 6 different themes, each with its own unique flavour. The cards are also rated by their impact on the game: Little Lore cards have only a minor effect; Tall Tales have worldly consequences; and Lordly Legends are guaranteed to turn your Small World upside down! At the start of each turn (except the first) a new event card is drawn and put into play. The next Upcoming Event is also visible, so players know what faces them on the next turn.
Will you end up drinking the Philter of Forgetfulness, be flung from the Great Catapult or even have a chance to seduce the White Queen?

Each event card has an impact on each round of the game, with players being forced into decline, having to abandon regions or claiming extra victory coins as well as many other events. Some have a small impact whereas others can change the tide of the game.
I have played with Tales and Legends a few times now and it does add depth to the game, whereby you may have to change your strategy based on the existing or upcoming event card. I think this is a good expansion because for some players who gain an early lead, these event cards can change who is winning multiple times.
If I do have criticism it is that it is quite expensive for a deck of cards. Some of the cards are quite wordy which can lead to confusion or just slow the game down. and lastly it is difficult to fit in the original Smallworld box. You can just fit it in if you put it under the plastic holder and take a few of the cardboard holders out that boost up the box. Not ideal and doesnt always fit in snug but may stop the deck from getting lost!
Is this expansion a necessity? No and even when you have it you may choose not to use it, especially when introducing new players to Smallworld, or just when you want a quicker game. There are plenty of cards so there are many options and you play with a max of 9 each game so the variations will keep the game fresh for many plays.Read more ›
