A look at quirky, eccentric and unusual customs and traditions which have grown up around parish churches in England over centuries, from cheese rolling, pancake racing, cannon firing to turning choir members on their heads, well dressing and mystery plays - and a lot more. There was more information than I expected within its covers, plenty of illustrations too and I have enjoyed dipping into it. A fascinating book for the traveller and for those interested in Church and social history.
It is clearly based on detailed and wide-ranging research and its coverage is excellent. It is well-written and easy to read6 August 2016
This is an interesting account of many customs associated with the Church, both the straightforwardly religious and community-based traditions with a religious link. It is clearly based on detailed and wide-ranging research and its coverage is excellent. It is well-written and easy to read, but cries out for a decent proof-reader.
