History will show that Ms Holmes is the most amazing writer of her age - I recognise her style in this collection of short stories - those of you who love her novels will not be let down - if only every short story was a novel ...I want to read her all day - order this book..... it will make you laugh - cry and take sharp intakes of breath - and lets be honest ....when does that happen in life .....
The book is a collection of stories Many are about families and modern life. There are odd connections. The title story is 50 pages long. It features a novelist at a conference on genocide.
Homes became famous some 25 years ago with a novel about a paedophile. Her stories are a mixed bag and they do not all succeed.Apart from the title story the best by far are : She Got Away, The National Bird Cage show ( a very clever story ), and Hello Everybody. The weakest is, Omega Point, a convoluted tale about the bones of Peking Man and citrus fruit.
Homes is a gifted writer. Most of these stories will provide rich reading.
It’s bad enough to be disappointed by any book but to be disappointed by a book written by an author you love is glum-making in the extreme. I couldn’t get on with this at all, I’m afraid. Didn’t like the characters, didn’t like the stories, found myself skipping swathes. No, I’m just not going to spend any more time on this one.
