This film examines and sensitively explores a mother's relationship with her autistic son,and how that Mother-Son relationship has become primary and also unknown to her has unintentionally limited David's capacity for change and development by her smothering care. The relationship for the mother played by Kirstie Alley has in several ways primacy even over the relationship she has with her husband, and eventually another possible partnerand external social workers. For her it is a learning curve experience and for someone like myself who has a son with Aspberger Syndrome it was gripping stuff and extremely relevant and worth watching again for the discrete if essential lessons it teaches.

I found this deeply offensive, a film that suggests bringing up your child yourself is an act of vanity, and indeed holding the child back(because of course there ARE no day schools!). That in order to keep all the self centred adults, indulged (father sister grown daughter and new boyfriend)you should dump your non verbal(unable to tell you if bullied or abused)child in an institution, an unfamiliar environment, with unfamiliar people in a setting so far removed from all he has ever known, that he is liable to think it a punishment and completely freak out for weeks on end! But hey as long as everyone else is happy that's all that matters! Pathetic! I thought she and her son were wonderful, great acting, until ruined by that franky cruel conclusion. This is not the dark ages, we don't offload our kids for convenience.

I should start this review by saying that I know next-to-nothing about autism. Despite that I thought that Michael A. Goorjian gave a remarkably convincing performance as David. Kirsty Alley plays Sally, a mother who has given up almost everything, her husband, her relationship with her daughter and her social life to look after her son. She is visited by a representative from Children's Protection who states that David must be enrolled into some sort of "educational" programme. If his mother doesn't conmply David will be taken into care. The reason I gave the film four stars rather than five is that I found this a little confusing as it wasn't properly explained. Apart from the fact that Sally chain smokes around her son (not surprising given the stress she is under), his mother was devoted to his care. She was just exhausted and they had fallen into a routine of doing a spot of grocery shopping then watching films all afteroon - the same films over and over again - in their nicotine stained, grotty apartment. David had been traumatised on previous "programmes" and Sally is reluctant to let outsiders into their lives . They are both stuck in a rut and it takes a new persepective from a potential suitor to make Sally reconsider. Stockard Channing is fabulous as Sally's sister and there is a real connection between the two women on screen. I believe this was a TV movie but don't let that put you off, it really gives some insight into the tough choices some parents are forced to make on a daily basis.
