As an admirer first and foremost of Shakespeare, I wondered if this book would reflect Tennant's love of the theatre and his outstanding performances on the stage. I needn't have worried, it was all there in the well written pages, capturing as they do, his zest for life and the stage. I believe his is one of the 'Great Hamlet's' and and his performance in 'Love's Labours Lost' was also truly remarkable. I was lucky to see him twice in Hamlet and once in LLL. I found Ms Williams research the media coverage of these roles well collated, quite fair and for those of us interested in his stage work a great memento and record.
Tennant's work on the Doctor Who series, which has captivated so many is also here. His interpretation of the Doctor for his residency in the Tardis, is truly phenomenal, making him 'My Doctor' as he is for so many. Again, just like the stage performances mentioned above, this book is a fitting record and memento of one year in the 10th Doctor's life. Details about the making of the series, its public reception and so much more are to be found in these pages. Sue Williams book leaves us in no doubt that David Tennant is one of Britain's truly great actors, both on stage and screen.
She has also covered the tremendous amount of charity work he undertakes on top of his heavy schedules. He has demonstrated that both The 10th Doctor and Hamlet have hearts, and so does he.
It is a further delight to know that this book is not a hagiography about Tennant's personal or work life. It is a mainly objective and grounded review of one year in his life, one worth having on the book-shelf to be read and referred to, as his career unfolds.
It was a relief, after reading Goodall's apalling book on Tennant, to find one which is such an engrossing and rewarding read. I hope Ms Williams will write a fuller biography about Tennant in the future, covering more of his life story and his other theatre, TV and movie projects. If she does, I would be very happy to purchase a copy.
