Product Description

Review

My favourite book of the season, this book is hard to beat. One of the best things about My Kind of Garden, in contrast with most gardening books, is that the words are few and never boring--Daily Telegraph

Finally, a really fantastic survey of many of the world's great gardens together with little-known gems in surprising places from Hong Kong to Buckingham Palace, and of course David Hicks's own immaculate designs. Beautiful.

Hicks was a well-known, and very well-connected (his father-in-law was Earl Mountbatten), interior designer before he turned his eye to garden design fairly late in his career. There is a mixture of gardens Hicks designed and those which inspired him e.g. Hidcote, Hestercombe, Villandry, Lutyens' gardens in New Delhi. There are more gardens included because he admired them - the majority of these being outside the British Isles.

This is gardening on a grand and expensive scale but notwithstanding that, it is possible to draw inspiration from it. Hick's personal style is formal and most, if not all, of the featured gardens are formal. At the back of the book are a few pointers on garden design elements - boundaries, paving, plant textures but this is only a small contribution. The real joy is the photography of some rather wonderful gardens. Unfortunately I didn't particularly enjoy the narrative - Hicks comes across as rather full of himself so I found it better to revel in the pictures which need little embellishment.

Five stars - and only because you can't give a product "six". This is simply an amazing resource. Mr. Hicks'garden insights are priceless and his perspective on gardens singluar in merit. One of my all time favorite gardening books - beautiful on your coffee table AND a great read. His last book - and what a shame!

1.0 out of 5 stars Out of focus garbage. 16 Nov. 2004
By Robert Peterson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I bought this book as a gift for my boss's wife as she is an avid gardener and photographer. I should have saved my money and taken the photos myself. The pictures are amateur at BEST. The talent is non existent and you will see that numerous pictures are OUT OF FOCUS. It looks like most of the photographs were taken with a Kodak disposable camera. The photographer must need glasses if she thinks the pictures are in focus. Conclusion: Save your money. You'd be better off buying your own camera and taking pictures yourself. There are plenty of other GREAT gardening books out there with much better, well thought out, professional, in focus, photographs.
