Box-set featuring three David Attenborough natural history series. In 'The Trials of Life' (1991) David investigates animal behaviour around the world, from the albatross to the gazelle. In 'The Life of Birds' (1998) he examines the sheer variety of our planet's bird life. And in 'Life in the Freezer' (1993) he turns his attention towards life in the Antarctic, filming some of the largest, smallest, sturdiest mammals the planet has to offer.
A seven-disc box set containing three of David Attenborough's most-loves series.
Trials of Life - Originally broadcast in 1990, Trials of Life is still one of the most comprehensive wildlife documentaries ever made. It examines animal behaviour in all its infinite variety and in doing so we are allowed to witness some ofthe most enchanting animal personalities, as will as some of the most fearsome.
Life in the Freezer - A wildlife/natural world series which looks at how all forms of life in Antarctia survive in extremes of temerature and wind.
Life of Birds - A series of ten fifty-minute episodes which present a fascinating and exciting view of the world of birds, the largest animal group on earth.

This is a fantastic collection. Having watched all the tapes, I can honestly say this collection is definately value for money.
Starting with Life In The Freezer, David Attenborough and a team of 20 others spent 3 years filming this inhospitable landscape and they gave us some fantastic footage. As with all his presentations he comes across as being excited about the subject, and that entusiasm is is catching.
Life of Birds is a varied look at the different aspects of birds. He has done for natural history what Patrick Moore has done for astronomy. The filming, of course is, fantastic. One of the other pluses of these documenteries is the fact that they are so colourful. I can visit places where no one has been before without having to leave the confines of room. (Maybe someone ought to suggest that those who are stuck at airports waiting for that delayed flight sit and watch these tapes. Less frustrating).
Finally we come to the 'Trials of Life'. This is the gem of the collection. Starting out with what they term as 'Arriving' right through to 'Continuing The Line' you the viewer are transported to various different places and see different events that scientists are only begining to understand. The filming is first class, of course, as well as the presentation. When I watched this again I was completly spell bound at how little I know about my own planet. And yet we want to know is there life out there in space, why not try and learn a little about what is going on down here.
The earth is a fragile place and needs to be understood more. This box set goes a long way to doing that. And at 17 hours for the whole set, you can't go far wrong.
Buy and enjoy. You won't regret it.
This is nature in all its tooth, claw talon and beauty.
In the box, you'll find three luxury boxes, one for each series:
The life of birds (1998 - 489 mins), Trials of Life (1990 - 358 mins) and Life in the Freezer (1993 - 174 mins). All have a 4X3 ratio only, and Life in the Freezer, in my humble opinion is the most vibrant in colours.
English is not my mothertongue, so I would have liked subtitling in many languages, but that is not the case: a missed opportunity. There is English subtitling, though. A nice touch: in 'life in the freezer' the subtitling is blueisch: not a luxury, taking into account all the ice and snow!
The quality of the scripts, for all 3 series is, of course, brilliant and beyond discussion.
I gave this box 4 stars, not 5, because this dvd box fails to equal the quality of 'The Blue Planet'-box. Still, this box is a must-buy for all you nature lovers out there!
Attenborough's enthusiasm is contagious, he loves what he does and does it better than anybody.
The Trials Of Life (1990):
A fascinating award winning series looking at the behaviour of animals from around the world. BAFTA awards include Best Cameraman and Factual Series.
Life In The Freezer (1993):
Focusing on Antartica, this series follows the varied wildlife of the coldest place on earth. The camera team won a BAFTA for their amazing photography.
The Life Of Birds (1998):
A gripping series detailing the lives of our feathered friends in such detail, the photography is truly spectacular. This series also won a BAFTA, this time for Best Sound.
An excellent box set representing good value for money and full of DVDs you will want to return to over the years.
This set is a must. Vintage Attenborough, vintage footage and outstanding insight.
Others to buy outside this box set are Blue Planet, The Planets, and The Life of Mammals. All Attenborough classics. Can this man do no wrong.
Simply the stuff of legends. Well done BBC and well done David Attenborough.
