The ‘trouble’ with Das Lied is that it is so poignant that performers seem often to feel that they themselves must embody, incarnate as it were, that poignancy, rather than place total faith in Mahler’s supreme artistry. Zinman has stated (in connection with this recording in fact) that ‘variation is extreme’. What he is saying is that the score says all we need to hear. Of course this is not to deny that the score must ‘come alive’ in the generative fusion of performance - witness a composer rehearse his own composition! But what Zinman’s remark stresses is that poignancy of this depth does not rely on histrionics in order to register in the mind of the listener.
This, it seems to me, is the vital perspective that Seckerson ignores in his dismissive review.
With Das Lied Mahler moves from the language and psychology of the Eighth to a new utterance: from ecstatic exclamation to refined inner contemplation. This allows for an interpretation that recognises the beauty of understatement. The intensity of reserve may be no less moving than its complementary intensity of extraversion: Emily Dickinson, who knew a thing or two, understood that ‘No is the wildest word’.
Turning to this recording: in the first place the recording itself is ideal. There is a truthfulness in the recorded sound that combines utmost clarity with spatial depth and tonal honesty. This is chamber music of the most exalted order and depends absolutely on emergent detail. I would mention one specific point, the mandolin.Read more ›
