This book is essential reading for those with an interest in the Dartmouth and the South Devon Potteries. Newcomers to collecting Torquay and Dartmouth pottery will enjoy this book as much as existing collectors. Excellent photographs of pieces from the different potteries and an interesting chapter on the making of Gurgling Fish Jugs synonymous with Dartmouth Pottery.

If you go to the antique shops of the south west, you will find lots of Devon Pottery. Some is quite cheap and it is fun looking around. This book provides an introduction to the main commercial potteries and is a guide about what to look for. Interesting but not detailed, you will have to go elsewhere for that!

HASH(0x94451e38) out of 5 stars South Devon potteries book 14 May 2009

This book turned out to be different than I expected. I am looking specifically for the motto ware marks, in detail. This book has a few. But I didn't know that the Devon potteries made so many different styles. It is a good overview of the potteries, the places and the pieces they made, and the history. Unfortunately for me, now I know of many more things I'd like to own beyond the simple motto ware.
